I watched "Stuart - A Life Backwards" with him and Benedict Cumberbatch which was a brilliant book, but the drama ended up being a bit Look At Me I'm Tom Hardy.

I've got to disagree there. If you mean he doesn't get many lengthy soliloquies then you are right, but a great actor doesn't have to chew the scenery.

No mentions yet for Johnny Depp ( very much like Spencer Tracy) and no mention for Ralph Ffeines( very much like Alec Guiness).

Neither of these two care if they are the lead or in a supporting role and I haven't seen either give a bad performance yet.
