Do you think it is reasonable to judge a challenge only on the injury that the other player receives? I really don't think it was a bad challenge, you see tackles like that in every premier League match it was just really unlucky that the guy's leg got bust. I reckon you see much worse tackles every week that don't happen to cause a bad injury (luck not judgement) but people would not react like this.
Like I said, Van Bommel is also a reckless player and I won't defend him. There are plenty of voices asking to drop Van Bommel for the same reason as De Jong. After the WC there was plenty of criticism in the Netherlands for the way this team damaged the legacy build up by teams gone before them. The Spanish team is build on the foundations of Barcelona. Barcelona who follow the Cruyff-philosophy which is the style of Dutch total football in the seventies. After the final you'd understand the controversy in the Netherlands...
You'd expect them to be debriefed after the WC and that they discussed this. If a player like De Jong doesn't respond to this new policy, it's an understanding decision to drop him.

Well that's the problem isn't it? There are so many bad challenges without anyone taken responsibility that people get used to them. That tackle of Henry the other day would cause an outburst of disgrace in most other leagues. Here it's just a hard challenge that (even maybe to some) warranted a red card. In other leagues they'd be shouting for a lengthened ban.
Sure football is a contact sport and there is a physical aspect to it but in the EPL there have been how many bad injuries because of bad tackles? Too many.
In the Netherlands and other countries, like Belgium after the Wasilewski-Witsel incident, there have been discussions addressing this rise in malicious tackles for some years. And I can fully understand and support them if they don't want to see those kind of challenges in their football-culture.
