Blue Moon Top 100 Bands Artists - Full List of Artists (pg 287)

As is my usual way I popped the Kinks top tracks on Spotify this morning but the selection was too obvious, some great songs but nothing I hadn’t heard before. Is there an album anyone can recommend that would represent the best of them?
Kinks greatest hits?

All very fair. No, I never had a problem with Steve Perry’s voice — I can manage Geddy Lee’s! — but I never thought their hooks were very good — they relied too much on his voice and harmonies for the hooks vs. power chords. I just never found them that catchy. I can’t think of a single song of theirs I really like. And I do really dislike “power ballads” — a lot. “Faithfully” is so so bad. And the lyrics are weak and banal. But as I said — having them force fed every fucking day on the radio growing up did not endear me to them.
I watched Journey live in Houston the other day.
I love the track Escape from that very album. I think they relied heavily on Perry’s excellent voice and the odd lick from Neil Schon.
Foreigner were good until “Foreigner 4” then went all schmoozy.
Styx were great until Cornerstone and Dennis DeYoungs nonsense.
Saga are still around today I believe.

I always liked One For The Road, their live 1980 record but it might not have enough older stuff for true Kinks aficionados. They did some great stuff but in the US, sadly, they’re really only known for Lola and their early 80s cheese (I’d bet the majority of Yank Van Halen fans don’t know You Really Got Me is a cover). Just a bit too English for Yanks I think. But I also didn’t realize they got in a snit about touring the US during the 60s — one of you mentioned that story earlier — so maybe their popularity here was blunted for other reasons.

I had the Kinks at 11 in my 15 so I'm glad they got top 20.
I don't love all their stuff I thought some of the album tracks got a bit twee. But love most of their singles.
Growing up they seemed to be perennially in the singles charts.

They may not hit a note with you or had major chart success in the US, but you can trwal through many an american produced show or movie (especially Wes Andersons) and a kinks track will pop up, whether well known or not.

With the trend for retro and looking back at music from decades before they have garnered many younger fans over the decades not Just in the UK as can be seen also in the commemt on every video posted, (the same can be said for most bands on the list tbf)

I don't think a band can be judged just on their formative years or chart postions but what their legacy is, and the Kinks have left one.

Also breaking America isn't the barometer of great music, except in Americans and some Brits eyes.
