The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American psychological horror film directed by Jonathan Demme from a screenplay written by Ted Tally, adapted from Thomas Harris' 1988 novel of the same name. The film stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee who is pulled out from her training to apprehend a serial killer, known only as "Buffalo Bill", who skins his female victims' corpses. For this she has to create a psychological profile and seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. Anthony Hopkins plays Lecter and Ted Levine plays Bill. It also features Scott Glenn and Anthony Heald. The novel was Harris' first and second respectively to feature the characters of Starling and Lecter, and was the second adaptation of a Harris novel to feature Lecter, preceded by the Michael Mann-directed Manhunter (1986).

The Silence of the Lambs was released on February 14, 1991 and grossed $272.7 million worldwide against its $19 million budget, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 1991 worldwide.

It is regularly cited by critics, film directors and audiences alike as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. In 2018 Empire ranked it 48th on their list of the 500 greatest movies of all time. The American Film Institute ranked it as the 5th-greatest and most influential thriller film of all time while the characters Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter were ranked among the greatest film heroines and villains, respectively. The film is considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant by the U.S. Library of Congress and was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry in 2011.[ A sequel titled Hannibal was released in 2001, in which Hopkins reprised his role. It was followed by two prequels: Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007).

Didn't vote for it but it would be relatively high on my list of best films seen. A fine adaptation of a book that I had read and enjoyed.

Hopkins is outstanding as Lecter.

Red Dragon was of course the novel that Michael Mann filmed as Manhunter.

Wheres the other 4 of tge day.

Bollocks to this counting down the 20 one a day maybe the top 5 but top 20 pah!

I actually think Cox was a better lecter

Manhunters legacy can be seen in most procedural and forensic crime films and tv series after.

SotL spawned parodies and average sequels

Great film deserving of its place here, not in my twenty but have re-watched it a few times and it has never dissapointed. More of a thriller than a horror, but the Lecter character is both likeable and disgusting at the same time and is probably thr role that Hopkins will be best remembered.

Mann's direction and especially the cinematography is superb. Unfortunately it probably influenced as much as anything Miami Vice. Silence of the Lambs is a good film but made for the masses.

It's forensic depiction of the case has been widely claimed to be the influence behind

Millenium
X-files
CSI
Fallen
Seven
Bone collector
Etc.
