Boateng

Please tell me you are kidding. He is right footed, playing at left back, 21 years old and playing in a semi final of a World Cup.

Yeah. all the way through these finals the media have had it way off beam - Fabio Löw and Jogi Capello have had masterplans of putting players on their opposite flank. Genius!

Looks a bloody good player imo, he'll be a top centre half in time.
Needs to offer a hell of a lot more going forward if he plays as a full back though.

I'm absolutely amazed & shocked by this thread, what exactly did the lad do wrong last night to be labelled worse than Micah 'I'm too good to defend' Richards. Short memories some people have on here if they can't even remember the majority of the performances he put in last year!

Do we sometimes sign players just for the sake of it watching this guy and i not slagging him before he even played because he looks a steadie enough player but who in our back 4 is he better than not as good at lb as bridge , certainly no where near as good as our cb's or rb's but we threw quite a lot of cash to get him is he that much better than what we have?

on last nights performance i'd say he's no better than Ned or Micah.
I don't know much about Boateng and have no idea what his preferred position is, but turning your back on a forward who's about to shoot/cross is schoolboy stuff.

he started as a right back. Then came Martin Jol at HSV. And Jerome had to play every position: RB, LB, CB, even midfielder in one season. It´s not unusual for defenders in the Bundesliga to play all positions, but what Jol did to a 19/20 year old was a bit harsh, i think. For the german U21 he played CB and done a great job. He called it himself his favourite position.

As Lahm refuses to play LB, Boateng filled the gap. I think, he wasn´t bad, considering the world class players he had to face there, but definitely this can´t be his future position.

He's better than Bridge, Onuoha, Richards, Zabaleta and Kolo. Not at the level of the best centre backs at the club in Kompany and Lescott, but he'll be a great replacement for them as a sub and imo would slot staright in as a full back - preferrably as a RB but would do a job against 95% of the Prem's wingers at LB!

-- Thu Jul 08, 2010 8:10 am --

I have actually noticed him do that on at least 5 occasions in this world cup and twice against Fulhamin April. Jumping in the air whilst turning your back is drilled out of you at 11 and 12 in this country - he's still doing it at 21! But he's got far better awareness, control, passing ability, dribbling ability etc than Onuoha and Richards who have little, if any, technical ability at all (they'd be laughed out of Barca's training camp with their skills!).

Hes definately a central defender but I think he would do a great job at rightback

Really gutted I should have checked him out more. He isn't a left back! Devo thought that position had finally been sorted out. But no we now have 5 suitable right sided players and not really anything decent on the left...

if I learnt anything about football its you need a good left back!

Exactly. Looks far more composed and comfortable with the ball at his feet than any of our centre halves.

Shit thread, great buy.

He's had a brilliant world cup. He looks solid & will do well for us.
He has got to be in the 1st choice back four.

Not sure why he has been subbed in this match.

Calf strain?? He looked like he was limping at the end of the Argie game too
