I think it makes goal difference irrelevant, so if two teams are on the same points, they both know who is ahead on the head to head record, meaning they don’t have to go and score as many goals as they can to beat their rival on goal difference.

Liverpool’s collapse at Crystanbul wouldn't have happened if it were on head to head results. They’d have won 3-0 as they wouldn’t have pushed for more goals.
We still would have been ahead on H2H.

Edit: Same with the rags in 2012

The only way goal difference comes into it is if we lose 2-1 tomorrow.

If they beat us 1-0 or by 2 or more goals, and we both finish on the same points, they top the group.

They decide the group based on:

1 - points
2 - head to head (including away goals rule)
3 - GD
My bad - I thought they'd scrapped the 'head-to-head first' rule this year in favour of pure GD.

Made the school boy error mistake of clicking on a MUEN article about City's Monday morning training pre-leaving fo Dortmund - only to see a video of LiVARpool training? WTF is wrong with this so-called Manchester paper?
