Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City Match thread

That made for some painful viewing! I remember thinking the same thing last summer though, obviously it would have been ideal to get going with some moral-boosting wins but at the end of the day its just a practice game. I think a win against Valencia would help boost everyone's confidence. Positives from that are that Yaya looks the part, as does Kolarov. Its obvious to me that barry isn't good enough, surely Mancio can see that?! Negative's are that our play looked aimless, like it did for most of last season. The defence was shakey, we lacked any urgency up-front. Although jo showed that he wanted to play, he isn't good enough. Adebayor is good enough but just doesn't show any hunger. Its hard not to be worried by this but i guess we've just got to move on.

We have players who are now, no quite upto the standard we want to play at, we are trying to play a high tempo game to get to the next class of football we are capable of and the game pass's by the less quality in this team. Barry off the pace trying to keep up making many mistakes looks too slow for our game gets caught off guard. Same with zabs toooo slow for our game was solid when we played the half decent half dogged football 2 seasons ago. Jo.... tried very hard tonight but just not got the quality for what we want. Joleon lescott has no spacial awareness and looks like he fails to listen to kolo when he trys to organise/ command the back line. Would rather have boyata in there then lescott... kompany is the best choice or boetang.... richards played well looking more confident, and more confortable at right back kolarov looked good, slighty off pace but can tell he has the class and great touc awareness, yaya fitting in nicely will work beautofully with silva de jong and tevez around him.

But up top without tevez's pace and workrate does anyone else think we look a little pedestrian? very ridgid and no kind of mobility. As one guy who sits near me says "ade aka rigamortis"

apart from that i think hart played ok.....

its not the result some are worried about its the, lack of cohesion, ability to create chances or inability, defending as a unit, lack of commitment from some players and all round performance with 10 days before the big kick off and i can understand there concerns

agreed.

Serious questions have to be asked about Lescott, Barry, Johnson, Richards, Zabaletta, Adebayor, Bridge, and RSC. Adebayor and Johnson have been massive disappointments in the whole pre-season....I was expecting a lot more from them than some of the others mentioned.

Certainly Gareth Barry, Wayne Bridge and Pablo Zabaleta looked lamentable tonight. The England NT experience appears to have left Barry shot of any confidence whatsoever.

Richards was his usual self with a curate's egg of a performance. Muscularity and not much else. As a defender Micah Richards is very much average. Lescott looks to be carrying on where he left off last season - playing very mediocre football and looking as though there is no confidence whatsoever in the back 4. This back 4 looks leakier than a warehouseful of colanders.

Up front Adebayor's ball control was shocking. I can't put it down to the slippery conditions cos the Dortmund players handled the same conditions much better than we did.

Some questions also need to be asked about the Kidd/Platt lack of tactical strategy. God help us if Mancini is stuck for too much longer with his grievously ill father. Neither Kidd nor Platt were apparent in the tactical area as the game wore on. Unlike the Dortmund coach. As a result of their ineffectiveness City merely drifted from one piece of meaningless possesional play to the next often culminating in useless mid to long balls driven at a ridiculous pace towards a colleague ( with his back to the opposition goal) who had a Dortmund defender immediately behind him. Pathetic.

Finally, the complete lack of shape, cohesion and penetration. With Tevez, and Silva to come in as attacking MF's, I can only hope that Gareth Barry is benched for the Valencia match.

Of course they are only pre-season friendlies. But they have served to damage the confidence of both the squad and the supporters. That is not much good as we face a cohesive Spurs side on 14/8 and possibly a resurgent Liverpool in two weeks time.

My humble apologies.
Was you being serious mate, or was it just sarcasm aimed at the doom and gloom merchants, of which there are many and quite frankly make me ashamed to be associated with.
It was one of my rare Clarkie fishing attempts, both at once hoping to draw a reaction from the ultra-serious people who would rant at me and snag some people who'd 'agree' with me (who I'd then quietly laugh at). Failed miserably and wasn't even worth the bother. Also, I appear to have offended depps tender sensibilities, which is deeply upsetting.

Now, to be serious:

Although I'm disappointed with the lack of defensive cohesion in preseason, I don't think it will carry over into the season. Kolo was unimpressive again and cements my belief that Kompany is the most deserving of that place. Kolarov looks like a great buy in the making. Good to see SWP doing well. Barry, well, if we play 4-2-3-1, then the two has to be De Jong and Yaya. De Jong is better defensively and Yaya is clearly better going forward. Jonno was fairly anonymous today but I'm not overly worried. Not impressed by Ade tonight but hopefully that will change when Tevez and Silva are on board. Have I missed anything?

Brilliant tonight, from the players that really matter,Kolarov had a great game and a great debut, swp shown y he should still be in the squad, great footwork, pace and touch.
Johnson looks like he cant wait for the season to start, although i prefer him on the right.
Ya Ya *shakes head* has got such a good eye and stood firm in front of back four and Jo...well,what a good pre season this lad is havin,i say keep the boy!
Still yet to see Boateng,Silva and Tevez is yet to come back!

Really looking forward to the season to start, cant see y some people on here freak out so much!!!!!!!!!!

Come on city!
I take it from that you mean Kolo, Lescott, Kompany, Barry are un-important.

I understand that this is only pre season (fitness and all that) but are people really saying our defence is just getting fit and isn't concerned if it lets in the odd goal or eleven? Whether it's pre-season or not you'd expect the defence (which has, barring the possiblilty of Boeteng playing CB, been our first choice back 4) to at least look as if they understand the art of defending. I'm not overly worried until we start to do this in important matches but surely no-one watching us tonight thinks our defensive unit looks strong. This would be ok if we look dangerous going forward and were only leaking goals because of over-committing men, but we aren't.

I fully appreciate we have some great players still to return and possibly a couple to add in the transfer market but only Boeteng is a defender (although De Jong can make a difference against good footballing teams). We'll have to hope that our attack becomes so potent that teams are scared to get forward against us so our defence is not bothered much. This never works though. Lets hope that a terrible (and yes so far the performances have been terrible) pre-season leads to an excellent start of the season proper which spurs us on to an excellent season as a whole. Fingers crossed for us, I hope Mancini isn't resorting to this too!

It's silly to get too up or down about a preseason match, but after watching the US tour and tonight's match, I'm very concerned about the defense. All the subs and missing players are bound to be detrimental to the attack, but City the defense at least should be solid. Instead, we've watched them ship goals at an alarming rate. Kolo Touré appears to be incapable of defending any more, and the fullbacks have looked largely helpless against opposing wingers.

With an absolutely massive league match now just 10 days away, it's alarming to see poor preseason performance after poor preseason performance -- and it's gotten worse in the more recent matches when the presumed First Team regulars have been getting the lion's share of the minutes.

Mancini has 10 days to make some dramatic improvements, or we're in for an embarrassing hiding at White Hart Lane.
