These players can never be judged without playing consistently. Sancho would of looked average in any one off game. Getting a run of games make all the difference. Its about opportunity which is something we hardly offer these players. Until that is sorted we will end up losing a couple of players who will eventually be worth alot of money.

Just love these people who think we can give fringe players lots of starting time. How on earth do they imagine we can do that? We have a strong squad of very talented players and we are fighting to retain our title. Tell you what let’s drop one and put in an untried youth player. Who would you drop to allow Diaz his opportunity of a ‘run of games’? Tired of hearing this talk. Wake up and smell the coffee. These guys, Diaz and Sancho, wanted game time; so fine we sell them to get some and make a profit into the bargain. Absolutely nothing we can do about it. We aren’t Southampton or any of the lower clubs.

Totally agree. We’re in it to win it- not provide a school for kids. If they’re not willing to stay & learn till they get their chance & we can make huge sums on them, then so be it. No top team perpetually plays academey kids unless they CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. If one a year comes through, then it’s cool. This year it’s Foden & Muric- so 2 kids have made the squad.

Let’s see how many games Diaz plays. It was easier for Sancho - there’s even less competition & pressure in the German league.

Khaldoon said it in an end of season interview a couple of seasons ago. ”We’ll never compromise on the quality of the first team.” I don’t think anyone of us would like that either. Some players will go, if they are good enough and have the right spirit, then they stay.

The Manchester clause insinuates United have been in close contact with young Brahim...
Maybe Bury or Wigan have been sniffing around :-)

Actually, it looks as much like a de facto buy-back clause as anything to do with United (although they do have a recent penchant for wildly overpaying for players).

On the bright side, what a hook for the academy, even if you don't make it here we have Barca, Madrid, Dortmund etc who will fight to go after you if you impress here.

I never saw Diaz as a winger, and we are stacked in midfield. I want to see Matondo get his time to shine, the kid can be so good in our system (which often uses quick transitions for goals, Sane is very good at this for example).

On the face of it losing talented and promising players such Sancho and Diaz does not look great. It looks like a club that are not as interested in bringing the academy players through as they say they are when they have an acedemy that should now be bearing fruit by producing players ready for first-team football.

It could be said the academy is producing the goods and that has already resulted in recouping around £23m for players that are not getting in our first team squad on general match days.

I can understand Madrid’s interest in Diaz, a highly rated 19 year-old Spaniard that I’m sure will be seen as an investment and if they can develop his obvious talent they could have a serious player on their hands. There’s obviously something that Guardiola doesn’t see in him that means he’s happy to let the player depart and to not involve him more than he possibly could have in certain games, even if its from the bench.

As has been said previously, we have some unbelievable players for players such as Diaz to get ahead of before they can get anything near a regular spot, and City’s first team isn’t there to develop a player for years down the line by offering him consistent starts and thus leave out players like Sane, Mahrez, Sterling, Bernardo, etc, when they are clearly of a more advanced quality. There’s too much at stake.

From Diaz’s point of view, this may be a dream move, but in all likelihood, surely it’s come too soon unless Madrid are planning on displaying some patience in developing the player, or loaning him out for a season or two, something City may have done for him to get some first-team game time in. Are they going to persevere with a player that would need time to come to terms with the standard of football required ? Probably not. Madrid have swooped quickly because had he been a free agent he may have been offered more money, with better realistic chances of first team football at a very good club if not one of the elite.

Good luck to him I say.

If the amount of money said on sky is true £22 m then I think that's fantastic business, the kid is good but don't thinks he is close to being as good as anyone we have, I say good luck to the lad.

You can never tell with kids. Not too many years ago, Wilfred Zaha was going to be the next big thing but once he was 'snapped up' by the rags his career went on a downhill slope and it is only now that scouts are watching him again. Some players develop slowly, or not at all. Others, a few only, will make faster progress. Diaz may or may not be one to make it quicker than most but unless he has enough about him to seriously challenge any of our already strong midfield department and if he's not prepared to learn the game with our squad then we might as well just take the money.

Excellent and thoughtful point
