Bye bye Jaguar

Jags lost their identity years ago. As with most cars, they all look the same from 25yds

It’s subjective of course but I disagree, I think Jaguar have more identity and panache than most other brands put together.

The F-type and XF were and still are very handsome cars and a good alternative to bland offerings from the likes of the VAG group and BMW these days.

Not a fan of their SUVs but I have a bee in my bonnet about stupid crossovers in general.

Jaguar sales in the UK have been in decline for years. It's the same with Land Rover, which they also own.

It's hardly surprising as their vehicles are among the most unreliable you can buy. I watched a video on Youtube a while ago posted by a guy who runs a vehicle recovery company. He was asked which vehicle did he most often have to recover.

''That's an easy answer. Anything made by Jaguar Land Rover' was his reply.

A friend bought a new Range Rover a while back, and he would concur with that sentiment. The problems he has had have been never ending.

I’m a fan of the brand, and I own a classic Defender so my opinion is heavily skewed but I am gong to defend Land Rover here.

Modern Land Rovers and Range Rovers do have a reputation for being unreliable, but it’s important to consider that they are very complex vehicles, and the more stuff you put into a car, the more things there are to go wrong. A basic bottom of the range Toyota will go on forever with just the odd oil change, because there is comparatively little in it to break.

Range Rovers in particular suffer from huge depreciation. Bad news when buying new but it means they’re very affordable on the used market, which means a lot of them are bought by people who then realise they can’t afford to maintain them properly, so they get abused and then start to fail.

Having said that there have been some failing with new vehicles, specifically the Ingenium engines, a lot of which could’ve been mitigated had JLR had a better approach to customer service and corporate PR.

And of course people not servicing them often enough. Like most manufacturers, JLR say you should service these engines every 20k miles which is complete and utter madness.

It was the Suvs and crossovers I was thinking of
