The closer it gets to the election, expect more of the same. It's gonna get dirty. I'm pretty sure politics being fought in the trough is a reflection of society's draw to trash media. Blame yourselfs.

My point exactly mate, too many people on all sides believe and repeat whatever spin the media outlet of their choice chooses to put on an event.

How are you BTW, long time no talk?

Not too bad Ronnie mate, you?

It's very hard to nail politics like you say. Lots of core voters are well, core voters, without bothering to explore the alternative. It's quite sad. It's all geared to overload the mind and create more division. No wonder politics can't keep up with the people.

Cameron is a bit of a bell tho. I've watched him blunder for a couple of years.

I'm fine thanks feller. I think Cameron comes across as a bit weak TBH, either it's because he is compromised by Cleggs influence or he tempers his decisions because of politics rather than conviction. I don't have much time for any of them - twats the lot of them. Going to vote UKIP in the euros just as a protest

Sadly for me most of our media is solidly right wing.

It skews debate and leads to false assumptions. The welfare debate is one thats been massively misinterpreted. Its something like people think benefit fraud is like 25% of claimants but the official DWP
Figures put it at 0.8%

How can we debate rationally when the media twist things so badly

Depends which paper you read, I picked up the mirror a week or so ago and I was amazed at how far they skewed it to the left. The problem is that folk nowadays want sound bites so they just get a biased précis put together by journalists with an agenda. Independant reporting is virtually non existent

The media debate is always one that fascinates me.

I think most would acknowledge that there is a significant portion of the media whose sole raison d'etre is to sell copies via hyperbolic reporting. They find emotive subjects and print emotive pieces and for what? Not to inform, but for circulation.

It is telling that the papers which do so also have some of the largest reader numbers.

I'm not even against newspapers having a political stance, but there is a significant difference in how broadsheets cover the news compared to tabloids.

Of course actually sitting down to read a broadsheet isn't as easy as glancing through the pages of a tabloid, and heaven knows that they are far more unwieldy.

I buy the Indy as I do appreciate its non political bias. It also has a broad spectrum of feature writers from Farage to Owen Jones. Its balanced at least as it gives a platform to all viewpoints. I believe you can only have an educated viewpoint if you understand the opposing view.

But then if I go in a shop that sells the Morning Star I have to buy it to read some proper commie views on life :)

Yeah, the Independent is a good newspaper. I used to read it, but really only read one newspaper these days.

I agree that understanding different viewpoints is important. And by that I mean actually sitting down and understanding the arguments, not just listening to what another person says. I think its the only way to properly inform yourself.

Still, when it comes to politics I (still) firmly believe that politicans, and voters, have all of the wrong incentives. Nothing will change, sadly, and sections will always be frustrated; not least because Macroeconomics doesn't, and cannot, focus on the individual as a unit of analysis.
