Right, this is actually something I feel quite strongly about. Christ on a bike. It's an Americanisation, of course it is, but I've heard many people of different nationalities use it, and they all succeeded in sounding ridiculous.
We're the Premier League, the first league, the top league, so we should garner respect from that. I've never heard any idiots refer to La Liga as LL or Serie A as SA or Eredevisie as....E, so why does anybody feel the need to abbreviate it? Is it really taking that much of your time to say that extra single syllable? And yes, try it yourself, it really is only one syllable shorter.
What's with the need to tag "English" on the front of it as well? At the moment, the Premier League does indeed consist of teams that all come from England, but what's to stop two Welsh teams being promoted next year? Despite the fact that they just won't, of course. Arsenal are practically French anyway, and Newcastle is barely human (the city, admittedly) so should we rename it the Multi National Premier League? MNPL does sound more official.
This wasn't really a rant as such, as I'm too laid back to work myself into a frenzy about it; it just annoys me a fair bit. Any advocates of the "EPL" tag will surely put the "SPL" forward as case in point that the notion works. However, they would seem to be forgetting the crucial, undeniably relevant fact that Scotland is in fact Scotland.
Do I have any famous last words for people who use the tag "EPL"?
STOP IT.
