Campaign Against Use of the Term 'EPL'

Right, this is actually something I feel quite strongly about. Christ on a bike. It's an Americanisation, of course it is, but I've heard many people of different nationalities use it, and they all succeeded in sounding ridiculous.

We're the Premier League, the first league, the top league, so we should garner respect from that. I've never heard any idiots refer to La Liga as LL or Serie A as SA or Eredevisie as....E, so why does anybody feel the need to abbreviate it? Is it really taking that much of your time to say that extra single syllable? And yes, try it yourself, it really is only one syllable shorter.

What's with the need to tag "English" on the front of it as well? At the moment, the Premier League does indeed consist of teams that all come from England, but what's to stop two Welsh teams being promoted next year? Despite the fact that they just won't, of course. Arsenal are practically French anyway, and Newcastle is barely human (the city, admittedly) so should we rename it the Multi National Premier League? MNPL does sound more official.

This wasn't really a rant as such, as I'm too laid back to work myself into a frenzy about it; it just annoys me a fair bit. Any advocates of the "EPL" tag will surely put the "SPL" forward as case in point that the notion works. However, they would seem to be forgetting the crucial, undeniably relevant fact that Scotland is in fact Scotland.

Do I have any famous last words for people who use the tag "EPL"?

STOP IT.

My God, we are really scraping the barrel of things to complain about now!

This 'being good at football' lark is a nightmare... Makes having a right good moan proper difficult.

Hear plenty of people talk about the SPL.

Not entirely sure Americans call American Football American Football either? Isn't it just Football to them?

EPL is as good an abbreviation as any. Much prefer it to people calling it 'The Prem' - that makes my skin crawl.

So, to sum up... Who gives a fuck?

How about "the league"?

SPL is run by the SFA. There is no EFA.

If it is the English top division then why is it called a French name?
Division 1
Division 2
Division 3
Division 4
Worked well enough until the money men decided to "Market" things differently.

The Scottish Started it with their Premier Division which started a few years before.

It is just garnish, there is no more enjoyment watching the matches, infact there is less with these daft kick off times for TV.

Take football off the TV and return it to the fans.

....you do understand what the evolution of language is, right? "Premier" is in itself an English word now.

Not all change is for the good.

Viva Rivaldo your argument that we shouldnt use EPL because as you rightly said two Welsh teams could possibly be playing in the EPL,also applies in Scotland as much as it is very unlikely Berwick Rangers are actually a English based team who play in Scotland so on that basis should we stop calling it the SPL.

Errr in that eventuality, we'd just have to go round and make all Berwick residents wear mandatory ginger wigs, and survive on a diet of chips, haggis, and haggis and chips.

In all seriousness though, they only call it the Scottish Premier League to distinguish it from the Premier League. Both should continue to be called the "SPL" and the "Premier League" in my opinion, as I think they just sound more appropriate.
