Can we afford to let Barry go?

I'm sad to see Barry go but I can understand the club's decision. His lack of pace and age means he won't suit pellegrini's pressing/high tempo style. But he has been a huge part of our rise to the top of the game in his time at the club and we have missed him whenever he's not played. What Barry offers is quick, forward, two touch passing. He's he ultimate link up man and the amount of times he finds players like silva in advanced and dangerous positions is incredible. His covering of the full backs is decent and his tackling good (unless outpaced) but what he offered us that no one else could is exactly what we missed on Saturday: linking defence and attack without a pause. Again and again, always finding feet, even in tight spaces.

Likeable fella too, didn't let the abuse he got from idiot villa fans affect him too much and wisely kept sctum through it all. "He's only here for the money" they screamed at him and two years later he was integral to a title win.

Great signing for us , great signing for Everton and I believe he has a few more years at the top if he avoids injury. Sad day.

And it's ludicrous to suggest that city would make decisions like this on how it affects united. If Barry isn't part of the manager's plans and wants to go to Everton, you would be an idiot of the first order to say "sorry gaz. If we give you the move you want it will help those red bastards so you can play for the reserves this year ". Disregarding the £5m down he toilet, What message does that send to the rest of the squad?

Very good post. Unfortunately some fans (and in this case its a minority) just cant see this. This is why Silva is on record of noting how much he enjoys playing with Barry and why he voted him players player of the year. He was never bought for his pace or for being a box to box player. He is a critical ingredient in our ability to retain possession and as you say, link defence to attack. Seeing fans quote Southampton away last season sums up the ridiculous levels of numptiness on this forum. I could name of 100 games where he has been incredible for City.

Its sad really because we are letting a stable pro who knows the prem and our team very well go at a time of transition (which in the last two games has looked remarkably vulnerable). I understand the club wanting to reduce the wage bill re: a player who has 1 year left at 32 years of age and I guess he would have had to be a key part of Pellegrini's set up to earn a 1 or 2 year extension. We will never know if this was Txiki and a pure financial decision regardless of what Pellegrini thinks of Barry or that Pellegrini came in with Ferna/Yaya in mind. If the latter, then our new manager is incredibly naive about the PL. He is going to have to seriously re-think the formation because a flat two of Ferna/Yaya is a disaster. Both want to run in straight lines.

So Barry's absence financially makes sense but on the pitch its the wrong decision at the wrong time. Games like Stoke away are where Barry would have been important this season. Unless Pellegrini finds a way to balance Yaya/Ferna with another player in midfield in a different formation, we are in my opinion, going to have a long season.

Excellent post.
Just as the Villa fan told us: 'With Barry you wonder what all the fuss is about. The first time he doesn't play you know what all the fuss is about.'
Fabio Capello thought the same. We will come to rue this decision which has been made soley for financial reasons and not footballing reasons.
Hey what do I know? I'm never going to be 'holistic'

I don't understand this one at all.
We have loaned out a usefull player in his last season. What the fuck is in this for us? We lose an asset that had some market value, we pay part of his salary if rumours are to be believed and at the end of the season his contract is up.

It's the kind of crap that put Spanair to the wall!

Afraid I have to agree, a very underrated player that makes things tick. As has been said the sort of player whose team mates enjoy playing with and does a lot of the unseen work. Hope we can settle on our formation and gel together, and wish Gaz Baz all the best for the season. Good player and a great pro which are few and far between these days.

For what its worth a poor decision IMHO.
Great player, great pro and we will miss him.
We might never know or realise it, but we will miss him.

Milner's the next one out of the door....

the die was cast a year ago when his age meant he was not offered a contract extension.
To compete in Europe midfielders have to be 90 minute dynamos, the emphasis on closing down
and pressing has never been higher. I should imagine his wages counted against him as well
which may have been the crucial factor. Good luck to the bloke, played a vital part in our
recent successes

Very good player on his day but those days where becoming less and less frequent.

His age was against him and its best he moved on imo but it should have been a cheap sale rather than a loan deal that once again leaves us loosing a player for fuck all and possibly still paying for him in some part. An England international and at 32, not exactly out to pasture yet we cant get a decent fee from another PL club for him?

Best of luck and thanks lad.

Who'd have thunk that in little over a year after winning the title seven of our champions would be gone?
No time for sentiment in sport I guess.

That is patently not true though.
