Can we afford to let Barry go?

MP has had enough chances to look & clearly is not impressed by Barry. If he cannot get in the squad for Cardiff or Hull it is difficult to see where he will figure. Unless we are keeping him in case we draw Accrington in the FA Cup. Definitely would not get in against Wigan as we all remember how he cost us the final in May.
So the answer is YES.

Personally I think the decision to get rid of Barry is more down to Txiki than Pellegrini and its more to do with the wage bill than football.

The decision does make sense purely financially unless the rumours of a loan with us paying 40% of his wages are true. At that point you have to ask whether saving £60,000 a week is preferable to having the option of Barry in the squad. In my opinion it's not.

In Europe I don't think we can rely on Barry, but in the PL we need him for certain situations, mainly away games.

I don't know what it is with the English PL and foreigners in away games, but without a good set of English lads in your team on the road results are very hard to grind out.

Agreed, he could play a 'Dietmar Hamann' role as a sub in shoring things up towards the end of a game when we're one up.Depends if he's happy playing in that role.

-- Sun Sep 01, 2013 7:49 pm --

rodwell should go on loan.
WTF?
Rodwell can be a big squad player for us this season. He has high energy levels - something we're missing at the moment.

True, but in my opinion if he wants to remain at a top 4 club and challenge for honours he might have to do stuff like that now, otherswise he will end up playing mid-table.

I don't think he is good enough to play week in week out and go for titles and cl's, but for away game starts appearances we need to keep Barry

He might want to be playing every week, but I am sure at his age trying to win honours are more important.

if he goes to Everton even on loan then that will make it easier for Everton to let Baines and Mophead go to the rags

They're lining up McCarthy from Wigan to replace Fellaini.

Barry to Everton will only go through if we sub Barry's wages...........Everton can't afford to pay them. Else Barry drop his salary demands

This saga confuses me. For footballing reasons, playing in 4 competitions, there is no logic in letting a player like Gareth Barry leave at this time.

But I suspect there may be some transfer deadline day shenanigans to come that might put a different slant on things.

Let him go is my view. I think the other options offer us more in the longterm. He done well but up at the highest level in European football he was found out and lacking. So time to move him on. We have a few players who can fit into the midfield be it Milner , Rodwell or Garcia if the 2 main stays are out or injured.
Time to move on with a new manager new tatics and new players are the norm and will always happen.
