We seem to be putting a lot of eggs into the CL basket. Barry was very good against the rags at the swamp and his positional sense and tenacity helped with pressing the opposition midfield in the PL where pace isn't everything. I agree with very good points made by DD and others.

I don't think we have no.

A good deal for City if MP had no plans to play him. He can play against our rivals but not us and his wages don't cost us anything and you have to remember that Barry was very much in favour of the move to ensure his playing time was high in a world cup year.

We will never know if this was Txiki and a pure financial decision regardless of what Pellegrini thinks of Barry or that Pellegrini came in with Ferna/Yaya in mind. If the latter, then our new manager is incredibly naive about the PL. He is going to have to seriously re-think the formation because a flat two of Ferna/Yaya is a disaster. Both want to run in straight lines.

So Barry's absence financially makes sense but on the pitch its the wrong decision at the wrong time. Games like Stoke away are where Barry would have been important this season. Unless Pellegrini finds a way to balance Yaya/Ferna with another player in midfield in a different formation, we are in my opinion, going to have a long season.

Hello mate. That's the first big issue facing the manager. What to do with our midfield. The defensive stuff will be sorted through training and personnel, but as it stands we have a big problem. Having done a lot of research on Pellegrini he favours a 4222 as we have been playing, but with very advanced full backs. This needs two tackling, mobile, positive-passing midfielders. And yaya isn't that. Your 'straight lines' point is pertinent, because there's no agility there.

Two possible solutions: drop yaya or change formation. Take a shit or get off the pot.

I think he will solve it, I'm certainly not worried. My guess is the latter, starting at stoke and continuing against united. I think he thought 4222 would work against the poorer teams, especially after Newcastle.

Mmmm. Not sure this is a good idea overall. Sure we get rid of a few mill off the wage bill, but GB is still Premiership class and I hope this does not come back to bite us on the arse. An injury or two to Yaya, Ferdi and Rodwell leaves us with Javi Garcia.

If we'd free transferred Barry we would've had to pay the last 12 months of his contract off. If we'd sold him to Everton we would've had to have paid him loyalty bonus. This way we get him off the wage bill a year early without paying him a penny, and, he can't play against us but can play against all our rivals. It was the best possible deal we could've done financially.

Well, for one, as it's a loan deal he can't play against us.
I have to say though - the deal DID give Everton a good option to sell Hair Bear to the rags - which will probably come back to bite us.

It was the opposite. Everton weren't going to sign Barry until they'd gotten the money off the rags for Fellaini. In effect the rags are paying for Barry to go on loan to Everton, where he can't play against us but can play against them. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

So. where are these English or home grown players we need?
Make no mistake the FA will up the quota in the very near future. Quite simply, the pool of English national qualified players in the Prem supporting the national team is not high enough.The hue and cry for the quota to be increased will just continue to get louder and eventually the FA board will cave in to the demands.
Milner can play in 4 positions: RFB, RDM, RAM and LAM (Pellegrini brought him on to play LAM on Saturday). He is vital to our squad this season and in the future.
