Preseason is meant to show our problems. It did. We repeated them again.

Either change the system or the centre backs ... we did neither, again.

By the time we have learnt this high risk system or signed a CB that is fast enough to play it, we will be so far behind it won't matter.

Really disappointed in Pelle because if even I can see it, and I'm no tactical genius I can tell you, what's he looking at?

Very very surprised we aren't going after a top defender. Vinny is excellent but he has been picking up a few injuries and suspensions over the last 12 months. In many ways injuries cost us the league last year. I'm especially surprised that with our two best CBs out they have just been content to make do with Garcia and lescott when we all knew their shortcomings

Can either of you two explain how the system was at fault for Zaba's individual errors from corners ?

People are mixing lots of things up in this and the Pellegrini thread. We lost yesterday because of individual errors from one player. Nothing more and nothing less. Yes Garcia and Lescott were put under pressure at times, and yes Hart had to make a smart save in the first half. But ultimately, we conceded very poor goals due to the aforementioned players' errors. And it's hardly a shock, Zaba as good as he is, is prone to the odd very poor performance due to poor positioning or decision making.

If you want to discuss why we looked so similar to last season, I'll try and put forward a theory. There's no question that due to the makeshift nature of our centre halves, our fullbacks weren't pushed anywhere near as far forward as they were against Newcastle. This coupled with Cardiff's overly defensive formation and the fantastic job that Medel and the Icelandic guy did in creating a shield in front of their back 4 and closing down the spaces we generally like to play in, meant that Navas, Silva, Dzeko, and Aguero, really needed to come up with something between the four of them. It wasn't an ideal situation, and it clearly went tits up because much like last season, the attacking players in particular made all the same decision making errors in terms of pass/dribble/shoot that they would do away from home last season. These things will be coached out of them.

We will be far better away from home as the players come to learn what is expected of them - just as we improved steadily over Mancini's first 8/9 months in charge. The next step we need to take is one from a formidable attacking behemoth at home, to a formidable attacking behemoth home and away. It will come.

I told you so! Why won't you believe me? I warned you all that this was going to happen. 13 games at Cardiff since the war, won 2, lost 5, drew 6. Now it's Pl 14, lost 6.
All I got was "don't be silly, compare the squads". That has bugger all to do with it, otherwise the best squad would win all 38 games.
"We'll stroll it 3-0, 4-0, etc.". Someone said it'd be 5-0. I replied that I'd eat my soiled underpants in the middle of Albert Sq if it was.
I reckon my stomach is going to be spared that ordeal.
Bloody listen to me the next time I warn you.
I know.

I will listen, I will listen!! One of their stewards was telling me that he had decided to risk a fiver on them at 125-1. His words were 'well it is worth it, but it shows who are the favourites'!! I bet he's laughing this morning.

We lost this because of two corners, nothing more nothing less.

I noticed that we went to man to man marking at corners as opposed to zonal marking. For me, when you have a team that is relatively low on height, zonal marking is by far the better tactic as you place your tall players defending the threatening positions as opposed to taller opposition players dragging them out of position.

Having Zabaleta go man for man is asking for trouble. It's clear that both their corners were aimed at Frazier Campbell recognising Zabaleta's lack of height and the element of surprise. That is very clever management. Campbell whilst not being the tallest is clearly decent in the air.

Defending set pieces is something we are going to have to work hard at, as this is one area where these lower level clubs will feel they can get some success as it is a great leveller.
i get your point, but what about the couple other chances they had, i wouldnt say it was just down to defending at corners/set plays. we were lucky they didnt score towards end of 1st half. its not as if we restricted them, they had clear cut chances and in all honesty they should have gone into the break at least 1-0 up, thanks to joe and lackluster finishing we got away with it, but the warning was there

but we live and learn and move on, hopefully it will be a lesson to mp and the team.

first thing this morning mp should be on phone getting another cb as boy we need one

Defending And attacking was a problem.

Manager carried the can last season. Now its evident that some of the players, in fact the majority are hiding

not rocket science

Billy Shears actually says something positive about Mancini - Shock!

Re: Cardiff Vs City Post Match Discussion Thread

Shoot, shoot, shoot, do not attempt to walk it in, use the wings, the number of times we had two players free on the wing while the middle was crowded with 10 of their players and 6 of ours was unbelievable.

SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT, I personally can forgive them if it doesn't go in but at least they would have had a try however to play tippy, tappy, walk through is not the solution. SHOOT.

Re: Cardiff Vs City Post Match Discussion Thread

Awful performance trying to see a silver lining is difficult, perhaps the players didn't quite get the tactics and need a bit of time to work on them but there can be little excuse for no effort or getting basics wrong.

When we scored to take the lead IF we were going to slow and kill the game off then we should have been able to do it. We've been sold attacking football under Pelly didn't look like that yesterday.

Only good thing yesterday was the Vinny song.
