Catalonian referendum

I had sympathies for Catalans but it's obvious that independence option barely have a majority, if they have it at all. You can't make such a big move with such a weak majority, if any at all. Without 2/3 support at least, you don't have a chance.

Unless the power-mongers start talking this is going to get very very bloody, I can't see Spain allowing it and I can't see the Catalans who want independence giving in and taking a backward step.

Catalans have nothing to confront Spain in any violent option. They don't have anyone from the world to support them. I hope they are clever enough to use nonviolent options.

Both sides have fucked this up spectacularly. Catalonia should never have gone ahead with this referendum without a sound legal basis as it gave a large number an excuse to boycott it and dismiss the outcome. Spain should never have cracked down on it the way they did. They could easily and peacefully have discredited it by pointing out its legal basis and the huge protests by remainers would have borne that out. As it stands the results of a half baked referendum have a lot more support than they otherwise would have had and no-one knows how to get out of this mess without taking authoritarian measures which will ultimately lead to the equivalent of ETA taking armed action against Spanish interests which could last decades.

I couldn't resist i had to google that, in 1941 one bomb fell in a field in Rhyl and damaged several nearby houses, obviously the Luftwaffe pilot couldn't tell Rhyl from Liverpool:)
I'm afraid when he flew over Liverpool the Luftwaffe pilot thought dropping a bomb here would only be an improvement,so went for where he could do more damage a field near Rhyl.

Having had it demonstrated that the referendum was illegal the claiming an overwhelming majority support independence when less than half the voting public cast a ballot is no basis for todays declaration being considered legitimate by the Catalans. Madrid's actions on the day of the vote were reprehensible so both sides are hardly coming out of this with much credit.

Today the Catalan Govt showed themselves to be silly in the extreme because businesses will continue to desert the region, Madrid will cut off money and their people will suffer because less than half of them now think they have a republic nobody ( except the Welsh FFS ) seem to want to recognise. Madness.

Must have had crap eyesight those Luftwaffe pilots and couldn't tell the difference between Rhyl, Liverpool and the sea
A couple of years ago 3 unexploded German bombs were discovered in Gwynt-y-Mor bay 8 miles off the coast, imagine if they would have hit, Rhyl would have been improved no end!

Was watching a Spanish boffin who teaches at a uni in Chicago on France24 news last night and he was virtually debunking the figures being bandied about by the Spanish government on the support for Catalonian independence within Catalonia
He said the vote on 1st October was not a true indicator of support, a lot of Catalans didn't vote purely because of the violence at the voting stations, support was roughly 43% before the vote, during the day it rose to 50%, by the end of the day it was roughly 53% and by last night it was over 60%
He pointed out that the Spanish governments hard thuggish line had turned many Catalonians against them, not only Catalonians but Spaniards were not happy with them
When questioned about the number of people at pro government rallies in Barcelona he said that they were bussed in from Spain and it was all staged by Madrid and caught on camera
Having said this i am not a great believer in Polls as we have found out in this country
Galicia, The Basque Country and Andalucia will be next

Really? I thought Andalucia was pro-Spain and benefits most from being part of Spain? And the Spanish Prime Minister is Galician, so would have thought Galicia is not close
