Just think the money banded around is pure lunacy. Spending over 40 million on a player would be idiotic. Yes, of we have the money spend it and all, but Cavani isn't worth 54 million. He probably isn't even worth 35. Besides he's a player that loves to play on the counter, we don't play that type of football and won't in the coming season under Pellegrini. There are a few options for us, Van Persie was one of those and we missed out. We need a player who fits into the football we play/will be playing and Cavani doesn't fit the bill. It would be like fitting a square peg in a round hole. We need a player who's neat, has an excellent first touch and great ball retention. The only player I can see with all those attributes is Roberto Soldado. Brilliant goal scorer, neat with a ball and would be immense playing with our Spanish lads. He would come in a lot cheaper than Cavani and would be a much better buy for the football we want to play! Soldado, get him in!
Isn't he also ancient?

He has just turned 28. Falcao is 27 and he cost 50m. Cavani is round about the same age too. We don't need strikers who are like 6ft 3in, Yorke and cole, van persie and Rooney and fowler and Owen aren't/ weren't renowned for their height! Soldado is a predator and would be better fit with silva, navas and isco if he comes.

Trevor Francis would've fitted that description,I used to love watching him play for us.

Last 3 years:
Gómez - 131 games/99 goals
Cavani - 138 games/104 goals

Pretty similar ratios there and given his mobility and power, Cavani would almost certainly be a better fit for us, imo.

He would score more goals for us than Gómez.

Gomez has a much better conversion rate: his shots per goal ratio is distinctly better than Cavani's.
That doesn't necessarily mean that he would score more goals for us though, does it?
No it doesn't it is just another measure of performance. Simple fact is that Gomez has been one of the most clinical strikers in Europe over the course of the past two seasons. He may have been the most clinical. Therefore, in a team that creates a lot of chances but does not take enough of them, he might score more than most; including Cavani.

-- Sun Jun 09, 2013 12:16 pm --

Yet he can't get a start for Bayern. Speaks volumes.

It says that he could not get a regular start this season with the best team in Europe; it doesn't say that he would not be a useful addition to City's squad for next season.

Have you watched him play ? He is dire ! He had about 4 good games in the title winning season apart from that he was shit. Decent impact sub but you need more from a 27 million pound striker. Keeping him at the expense of Tevez and Cavani is lunacy.

I think you had already made your feelings clear about Dzeko, several times

Honestly... and this is from a big Pellegrini fan who was defending him in the weeks leading to his appointment... people seem to think anything MP touches will turn to gold. It may not be as simple as that... he isn't going to make Dzeko's first touch improve, and no not all chances are going to be played to his feet with a gaping goal in front of him. We will not become a wingball team, that will just be an option and much of our play will still be intricate passing. For that reason + Dzeko's questionable mentality (unwillingness to jump for so many 50/50s, regular laziness), I'm uneasy about him being our main target man next season. He'll probably score a fair few but Mario Gomez and Javier Hernandez score, yet they have been marginalised at top clubs because of how little they bring to the whole team performance. Top teams want 'complete' forwards more and more these days, who involve themselves more in the game... Van Persie is a great example sadly. A Dzeko/Hernandez/Gomez is a great option to bring off the bench and use more sparingly though.

Dzeko, if he stays, will get more balls played into him now Mancini has gone, no matter who was to take over.

Mancini was awful at that aspect of football & City are one of the worst teams in the country for wasting crossing or diagonal opportunities.
