Centre back options

But are we gonna sign anyone better to be 4th choice behind vinny, Otamendi and Stones? Plus he is a lefty.
I don't know I suspect Pep will rather go for a player with defensive flaws who can pass than a player who is a more solid defender but who lacks ball skills. We will see though.

Badstuber sadly looked far away from his old level during his loan with Schalke 04. I doubt he has the level required for City these days. Further I believe his injuries were all serious ones, nothing comparable to the muscle injuries that plagued Kompany, so there could be a general doubt concerning Badstubers physical constitution.

Cudnt we have kept kolorov if thats all were after??
No, I think you're missing my point. Because if it was kolarov we'd need vinnie on the pitch pretty much every match because last season showed that 2 from stones, kolarov and otamendi wasn't good enough for where we wanted to be. Any of those three were probably ok with kompany next to them but none of them good enough imo without him. Potentially that changes with batstuber as an option. Imo you then have several pairings that would be good enough as long as one of kompany or batstuber was there. So not quite so reliant on kompany. Assuming batstuber can get back to his pre injury form that is.

Don't know what to make of the lack of proper links to CB's. I don't think it's a great sign. The Laporte saga has really hurt us in this regard.

If we trigger Inigo Martinez clause for example. It would show a certain amount of hesitation on our part. Since we could have done that a long time ago and got him before our pre-season.

I agree with that.

What I don't agree with is Pep putting his faith in Vinny. He has said he can't 'trust' him. Now he can. Huge gamble.
Lol. You are bending over backwards to not see the likely obvious.
Perhaps its not that Pep is putting faith in KompNy staying healthy, rather perhaps he simply just has equal faith in his 2 other CBs

I think we need a 4th CB because Kola left. While some fans have been concerned, it seems (and based on the facts, correctly so) that Pep wasn't worried. He knew the problem was at GK and FB.

Unfortunately Kolarov leaving leaves us 1 short. So we'd try getting Kolarov's replacement or keep Mangala.

Badstuber free, experienced, pep rates him and can play CB, lb and dm. One player can cover all the area that we are short, knows peps systems and is on a free, leaving us 150 odd million for the mbappe deal.
Hmmm.... What are the chances he won't spend most of his time in the physio's office?

Except for the fact that last season didn't show this. But carry on :)

I actually think we have three top class CBs, two of whom are criminally underrated by our own fans.

When you consider the following:

  • We had a keeper who let in 16 goals from 18 shots, some of which were extremely soft.

  • We had aging full backs who didn't have the pace to perform at the top level.

  • We have a manager who insists we press teams and play a system that can leave the CBs exposed (compared to other managers).

The fact we only conceded 6 more goals than Chelsea (8 of them in games against Everton and Leicester) and the fourth best defence overall speaks volumes about our CBs.

Just think what a difference top class full backs and a goalkeeper will make.

Mauricio Lemos could be a decent signing too. But his release clause is near 30 million euros.... Can someone tell me if the money for a Center Back is directly related to the sales of Bony, Fernando, Delph and all the others? Or is it more about Mbappé / Alexis signing?

We did have the most possession in the league comfortably though, which was our best form of defence. We would dominate teams and still give away clear cut chances from long balls down the middle. Consistently. I think they're good enough to win the league, but the step down from Kompany to the others is very significant.
