Centre-back

I dont understand why we never went for Mats Hummels, him and Kompany would be a class partnership, he's at a good age of 25 and he wouldn't cost much more than Mangala.

Its a very good question,he is definitely top notch,so why are we not showing interest?

Hummels is a quality player who's very comfortable on the ball but, while not slow, isn't the quickest.

While I obviously wouldn't put the two players in the same bracket (yet), don't those charecteristics remind you of a young defender at our club already ?

Mangala & Benatia have something in common, pace. This seems key to Pellers thinking. Hummels isn't blessed with it.

Ps: I'd sign him tomorrow :)

It can only be a pace thing then..... Regarding the comparison,i don't see it,Hummels has far more authority and a much greater presence, hopefully that is just an age issue though.

It might be that he's simply not available. A lot of people are getting linked with defenders, yet he doesn't seem to be being stongly linked with anyone (just the mandatory rag interest)

There's probably Barcelona fans and the like saying "Why don't we just go in for Kompany?"

Has Hummels married a local girl and declared his love for his club though? Is he also on 200k a week? ;-)

He's a greyhound compared to Hummels.

I agree but he is actually slower than Terry Fenwick.

I don't know where this myth with Hummels lacking pace comes from, he looks slow I give you that, but he was recorded at 31 something km/h last season. Some of you midfielders are slower, a lot slower than that. Him and Kompany together would rule the PL. Very compatible in my opinion.

Thank you.
The thing with Hummels isn't his top speed, but his acceleration. He isn't very fast on the first few meters. But he rarley needs it with his positioning.

I have been wondering why its just Mangala or Benatia and Hummels has not been pursued ....would rather have the German than the other 2

Todays scouting network probably has put at least 10 defenders on a list to replace Lescott, and who are probably all fantastic players (I would think so at least). Every single player that has come in last year was perfect other than the injuryhit Jovetic (who still had a more than decent record). So as it is now, todays scouting network seems to work. If they report Mangela to be the best possible, I'm fine with that. And maybe these reports will tell you that Hummels yet ebing a great defender, is not what City is looking for.

As someone said earlier Mangala would be the best option as the overall age of our teams spine is reaching 28/29, we need some youth to develop alongside them.

With the transfer cap and other factors you have to think more than just about an instant impact. The main issue we have is the balance between success now and success in the future. We need to make sure stars in our academy realistically can make an impact if good enough, but we also need players who can make an impact now. Someone like Rekik or Nastasic will want to get game time and prove themselves. Do you bring in Mangala who is more highly rated than them but not much more experienced, and a similar age... or do you bring in a proven defender who is a bit older and can be a role model for the likes of Nastasic?

For me this is why it is key to have a director of football and a settled board/management structure in place. We don't want the situation to arise where we follow Chelsea's suit and have 5 players in every position and you have 23 yr olds who have been at the club for 5 years but never played a game.

With the transfer cap I think the club will look at players who can go up in value and get even better. Mangala ticks that box. There is time for him to become a star and to be worth a fortune. With Benatia his price will only go down from joining us most likely. Defenders are going for huge money at a young age and there aren't many seasoned pro centre backs fetching huge prices anymore.
