Centre-back

With the transfer cap and other factors you have to think more than just about an instant impact. The main issue we have is the balance between success now and success in the future. We need to make sure stars in our academy realistically can make an impact if good enough, but we also need players who can make an impact now. Someone like Rekik or Nastasic will want to get game time and prove themselves. Do you bring in Mangala who is more highly rated than them but not much more experienced, and a similar age... or do you bring in a proven defender who is a bit older and can be a role model for the likes of Nastasic?

For me this is why it is key to have a director of football and a settled board/management structure in place. We don't want the situation to arise where we follow Chelsea's suit and have 5 players in every position and you have 23 yr olds who have been at the club for 5 years but never played a game.

With the transfer cap I think the club will look at players who can go up in value and get even better. Mangala ticks that box. There is time for him to become a star and to be worth a fortune. With Benatia his price will only go down from joining us most likely. Defenders are going for huge money at a young age and there aren't many seasoned pro centre backs fetching huge prices anymore.
The problem we have at CB are not in ability, but in experience. With Kompany in the team, whoever played with him was quality, but when Kompany was out, the authority was missing. As the season progressed, MDM stepped up his game and became that figure of authority, but he's at an age whereby he can't go on much longer. It's this potential for a lack of authority if Komps is missing, and for that reason I would go for the more experienced Benatia rather than a player who may have huge potential but is still in the process of learning the game.

Benatia plays in the same position as Vinny so if we sign him who plays on the wrong side?

Sounds unlikely given the Mangala/Benatia situation, but Sport Bild claims City are after Schalke & Germany defender Benedikt Höwedes (26).

It doesn't really matter at CB as ideally a CB should be comfortably two-footed. At fullback, it would matter as a FB would try to force a forward out wide, whereas a CB could be expected to be attacked on either side of him. Having said that, I believe that Clichy is right footed, as is Phillip Lahm of Bayern.

Wasn't impressed with Clichy when he played right back.

He's no Lahm, that's for sure, but he's still right footed and he plays at LB!

I'm not impressed when he plays left back

Anyone know anything about this guys?

Kristof Terreur ‏@HLNinEngeland 38m
Young Belgian defender Matthias Bossaerts - who turns 18 tomorrow - joins City on their American tour. City will be without their WC players

Not true as Sagna will join the US tour, as will Toure. And Hart and Milner as England crashed. And maybe Silva?

I think Sergio and Zabaleta will definitely be out. Zab had a long long season and a deep WC and it won't surprise me if he doesn't feature in the first few games. Sergio needs a good long rest, the medics should add 2-3 weeks extra to their recommended recovery time as when ever he has "recovered" he has injured himself again. Silva too I expect to be given some rest given the problems with his ankle, but he might be part of the camp while not playing too much

Interesting pick if he has gone because he isn't in the EDS yet.

I wonder if Denayer is there?

Anyone know how tall young Bossaerts is now? Was very very highly rated when we snaffled him as a junior...

I'd guess about 6'2 and pretty well built,he has a superb, strong physique already.

He seemed to stall in his development about 12 months ago but definitely picked up again,i'm not sure how he'll turn out to be honest.I'd say Denayer is currently much further down the road and id hope he's involved with the first team this year.

He's quite small... but the lads seem to be very supportive even so.

Height is irrelevant. Fabio Cannavaro was never the tallest but was one of the best modern defenders there is.

What's the current situation as far as Karim Rekik is concerned?

Is he still on loan at PSV, and, if so, do you think he could brought back and still have a viable future at City?

How many top class CB's under 6ft can you name that are playing in the modern game ?

He is back at City at the moment.

There are rumours that Bielsa wants him at Marseille, either way he needs a few more loans before he is considered good enough for our squad in my opinion.

His loan deal ended and he's back with City for pre-season.......He told City he wouldn't come back unless he was able to get some games with the starting 11 this year, so anyone's guess how this will turn out for him....

He's a contracted player. He does what the club tells him. A bit Billy big time for me if he really said that. Hopefully something was 'lost in translation'.
