Champions League ban?

If related parties can’t sponsor - what about Bayern Munich. Adidas, Audi and Allianz have 8 per cent shareholding’s in the club and seats on the Executive Board. The allegations re who paid the sponsorship can be settled in the respective accounts of the sponsors. If Etihad have said they paid us x it will be in their accounts. This is a witch-hunt. If Qatar want to give PSG £200m a year in sponsorship that’s down to them and why should UEFA question it.
Related parties can sponsor but any transactions have to be declared in the accounts and (from an FFP point of view) have to be 'fair value'.

I have asked this before but there is something about this FFP thing that I still don’t understand.

The last time I looked City are in the top 5 Clubs in Europe for revenue and are operating at a profit.

Our record signing was Riyad Mahrez for £60m (€66m). Other clubs, notably Barcelona and PSG routinely spend in excess of €100m on players. PSG have less revenue that we do and (presumably) a higher wage bill.

The Rags are deep in debt, we have no debt.

So, my question is why is it only us that are constantly being mentioned as being under investigation ? Why is it only us who are accused of buying success (how many home grown players do Liverpool have ?)

Everyone questions our sponsorship deals yet nobody even blinks at the reported €50m plus shirt deals Barcelona and Real Madrid have done with Rakuten and Emirates respectively.

This is nothing more than a witch hunt.
Der Spiegel admitted that "Despite the high spending, however, the football project in Manchester is now profitable", but their review was a historic re-raking of mud from the UEFA review in 2014. Who obtained this information, and the how and why remains unanswered.

Three motives:
  • Football wise, who are the beneficiaries? The cartel.
  • Geo-politics - Only one nation who UAE is in conflict with. Qatar.
  • Financial value of information. An individual or group could obtain and sell the information.
So three groups could have instigated this. The third is the most likely source. If there is a financial motive then who is to say that is is 'authentic'?

What annoyed me was at the end of the Der Spiegel week, we had a French story from Mediapart about a FIFA investigations unit looking into the allegations of unauthorised payments to an agent in the transfer of Pogba and I don't think it was carried by a single British newspaper. It was an old story but Mediapart claimed that a FIFA investigations unit had alleged that either Juventus or Man Utd or both should be sanctioned and UEFA had either ignored this or overruled this.

The press have an obvious agenda because it suits

  • their commercial interest to bash City
  • it fits their race and political agenda of Arab bashing and rich Arab money influencing English sport.
There is a more radical dressing of the argument as they will argue that City are not just owned by a private individual but by someone with access to state power but in the UAE the wealth family is the ruling family. I strongly suspect that the super-rich in the Middle-East are all strongly tied in with ruling families and probably related to each other.

Economic advantage stems from political power. In Western Europe and the States there is a separation between economic wealth and political power. The Arab states are artificial creations in many cases when colonial powers negotiated a hand over of power to the local power brokers but football journalists forget this. Oh no, your football club can not be owned by Sheikh Mansour because he is tied in to the Arab state, well find me an Arab billionaire who isn't. You did this. Effectively only the Western world is fit and proper in their eyes. China, Russia, the old Eastern bloc tainted. Likewise South American dictatorships. Likewise Thailand (but only if you are MCFC. LCFC links ignored) etc etc. If they really wanted to write about this subject matter they would look into the history of the region. The modern middle-east goes back to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War. This is when Britain and France moved in, and then there was the discovery of oil - just around the same time (early C20).

Leicester aren't a credible and consistent long term threat to the G14.
See http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/Vichai-linked-to-new-party-30286418.html

"Thanks to his massive wealth and strong connections, Vichai is seen by some as having the potential to be the “last piece in the jigsaw” needed for the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to retain power via a new political party. Vichai has maintained good ties with many key figures in the NCPO, including Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, one of the most influential figures in the ruling junta..."

If you look at any billionaaire you will probably find connections to politics. The Glazers donate huge sums to the US Republicans. We have Abramovic. There are other Russian oligarchs associated with English clubs eg Everton and Arsenal (Usmanov), again nothing said.

Like you suggest, it's cynical interest of what is newsworthy and who benefits from the 'news'.

Maybe now but in the original control period didn’t UEFA look at whether Etihad was a related party?

They probably did but it didn’t matter as their sponsorship was deemed to be fair value. The problem was with Aabar & Etisalat, where their sponsorships weren’t deemed to be fair value. UEFA’s auditor claimed that these were related parties which we and our auditor would have disputed. In the end, the fact they moved the goalposts with regard to pre-June 2010 wages meant that never had to be tested. I suspect that was very much their intention.

Thanks for this detailed and very interesting response.I hadn’t made the connection between Qatar and UAE so hadn’t considered the geopolitical aspect. If this is indeed a factor clearly only club owners are being targeted as both Real Madrid and Arsenal are heavily sponsored by Emirates but Emirates does not have an ownership position so the Clubs are not under the spotlight.

I have always had a tough time believing the “cartel conspiracy”. European football is better and more attractive with us as part of it and the powers that be at UEFA and indeed, the other clubs, know that. Why would the want to keep arguably the best team out and diminish their product ?

So basically, it comes down to the press and so called investigative journalism. It’s not the first time the press has tried to bring down someone (or something) in power - just look at what CNN is doing to Trump.

I am not sure at the level of the Champions League we can claim to have improved the product to a significant degree, but we have displaced an English snout from the trough and clubs like Bayern are probably wary of City's potential. We've already weakened them in a way by taking Sane and De Bruyne from German football.

I don't know who is responsible for stealing City's emails. I was just looking at it from the point of view of who would benefit. I don't know how easy this sort of thing is to do.

City have links to a state. Some parts of the media don't like that, but they don't seem to mind when the European Championships or World Cup is on, nor do they ever seem to investigate other clubs. They find their moral compass when City are involved.

Indeed Marv. Good post mate.
