Champions League Final | Post-Match Thread

Every time he gets asked about CL he says the same thing - one mistake and you’re out - that works for the manager and the players. We live and we learn and we know we will be back for that trophy again if the luck and all the other stuff goes our way. The league is always king don’t fall for the media bull shit around CL. It’s a wank competition that unfortunately we have to win one day - and we will

The players learn but does he?

Tinkering unnecessarily in a big game seems to be part of a repeating pattern.

Way too many fluffy "we dream of winning the Chumps League" player interviews in the build up to the match. KdB mimicking his manager with his dramatic "If we lose, we are failures." statement to the media. Players leaving the hotel to board the coach towards the stadium like they were on their way to facing a firing squad.

Pep and the backroom staff living the good life in Porto "throw another shrimp on the barbie."

I've never seen a Manager kissing a Chumps losers medal either, ho hum.

Tinkering is not what he is doing. That implies he is seeing what might happen if he makes certain changes. Do you think he wanted to win the game? If the answer to that is yes then you have to believe that whatever decision he made on selection was with victory in mind. That is why we have been so successful, not because he tinkered.

I thought he finally learnt after the Dortmund and PSG matches, but he just couldn’t resist one last tinker

he obviously hadn’t learnt and he will do it again

he’s a genius but clearly this is the one flaw in his make up

It seems to me that a lot of our supporters don't learn. 10 out of the last 15 domestic trophies won and cup defeats this season in an FAC semi and the UCL final (our only defeat in that competition) shows that Pep learns plenty.

Also, what people miss is that Pep did need to make changes for the Chelsea game; hard to deny that he got them wrong but also hard to deny that whatever he had done, the player might well have failed on the day.

However, the tinkering if that is how you want to describe it is what leads to Pep continually improving the team and learning about them and the game.

He will almost certainly tinker next time we play Chelsea and the chances of him getting it right will have improved.

Dont know if it was even a good idea to do the false nine formation against a very strong back 5 that is getting extra screening from Jorginho/Kante.

A striker would have been isolated for sure, but our false nine game really did not gave them any headache either did it? You did not see Chelsea CB's out of position, chasing players not knowing who to pick up.

False nine tends to work better if movement are good and quick and it is against a standard back four, but a well drilled back five is really hard to break up with no strikers.

When we had the strikers on we had zero service for them tho.

Tuchel did his homework, Pep I do not know what he was doing last 2 weeks as he basically got 1 shot on target with his tactics and we were lucky Pulisic and Werner missed their bigger chances.

Also our wingbacks were instructed to sit deeper or obvious reasons but that meant Sterling and Mahrez were on their own and they could beat no one. When sterling beat his defenders for pace once his first touch was the problem.

Also our off the ball pressing was off, leaving one of their wingbacks always open and having the defenders transition every time ball was changed side while our fullbacks leaving big gap behind them to press their wingback.

It was just a collection of tactical blunders from Pep and what really hurts Chelsea did none of fancy tactical stuff they did what was expected from them on a very high level tho.

Whatever way I look at it, Tuchel taught Pep a lesson and it cost us a lot. Are we gonna learn from it? I dont think so.

Which is great. Tinker away. Just not on our first European Cup final.
Brian Clough's view: let them come and beat us.
Pep: Ive had a thought.....

This ‘tinker’ nonsense has to be hit on the head. He picks as a team to win a game. He always has and he always will. More often than not (evidentially) he will succeed with those selections but he will fail IN THE SAME WAY ALL MANAGERS ULTIMATELY DO. Name one manager that will win more honours with City than Pep...

I have no doubt that he thought it would win the game however I also doubt anyone else thought this.
