Champions League Games 5/6 March

I don’t doubt it. Football is being killed.
They'll realise eventually that you can't measure 'opinion' with maths, physics and equations. The handball last night and Otamendi's before was just that. The ref didn't initially think it was a penalty but after being asked to check it, he is immediately doubting his own thoughts and viewing slow-mo footage and discussing with someone who already suspects it's handball will only end in one decision. The game we all love will be (is being) ruined by this unless it's changed.

Now, I don't have a problem checking for offsides where there's a clear error (and not if someone's foot is 3mm off as with Aguero at Wembley), nor if a ref wants to check if a handball is inside or outside the penalty area, but checking for 'intent' is always about opinion and it will be the most dominant referee (on field or off field) that gets their way.

Perhaps what FIFA need to do is say every handball in the box is an offence, but only punishable by a free-kick unless it's in the 6yd box or a definite goal-denying shot and only then it's a penalty.

What struck me last night, as I was half-watching both games, and based on other European games i have watched both this and last season, is how good we are.
I mean, apart from the obvious Messi, there are very very few players in clubs such as Barca, both Madrid teams, Juve, Bayern, Paris and so on, who would slot into our starting XI. To me that's a pretty awesome, and kind of mind blowing insight.

Still worries me that the different nature/demands of European football maybe catches us by surprise a little compared to what we are up against domestically. I genuinely think we are the best team in Europe but then I look at the Lyon games and even significant periods of other matches in Europe this season and think we have seriously struggled against teams that we are much much better than. In theory playing against European teams should suit our style more but somehow it just doesn't seem to have done this season to me.

I facking hate UEFA and all that it stands for and last night showed exactly why. The whole organization is cesspit of deceit, corruption and a hellbent dedication towards the G14 club's progression. I want to beat the dirty scousers to the title more than anything in the world and if this w*nkstain of a 'competition' starts getting in the way of that I would play a second string in it no problem. Yet another new rule was put in place mid game against us the other week and the tw*ts used it against PSG to ensure one of the darlings progressed and one of the 'renegades' was eliminated. The introduction of VAR was meant to weed out mistakes and injustices but all it has done has confirmed what a lot of people already knew-the whole f*cking game is bent.

We'll certainly need to tighten up defensively. Take the Shakhtar games out of it, and we've conceded 8 goals in five games so far this season without playing a top side.

Yep, not convincing at all. Would love us to blow Schalke away next week but suspect it will be more about grinding it out, getting a few players back from injury and hoping we start playing our proper game in Europe in the latter rounds. Certainly we should be taking nothing for granted next week after what we have seen in the CL this week.
