Champions League Groups (Update p6)

Got even more bored this afternoon so modelled a draw simulator. Ran it 5 times and got:

Group 5 Team
POT15 Porto
POT25 Shaktar Donetsk
POT35 Man City
POT45 Steaua Bucharest

Group 7 Team
POT17 Bayern Munich
POT27 Marseille
POT37 Man City
POT47 Celtic

Group 2 Team
POT12 Porto
POT22 CSKA Moscow
POT32 Man City
POT42 BATE Borisov

Group 5 Team
POT15 Barcelona
POT25 Marseille
POT35 Man City
POT45 Steaua Bucharest

Group 7 Team
POT17 Bayern Munich
POT27 Athletico Madrid
POT37 Man City
POT47 BATE Borisov

We can still make pot two if:

Freiburg win at home to Schalke 04 this weekend (possible)
Real Sociedad beat Valencia to fourth (possible)
Arsenal lose at Newcastle and Spurs win at home to Sunderland this weekend (doubtful)
AC Milan lose at Siena and Fiorentina win at Pescara this weekend (very doubtful).

Should they all qualify, Schalke 04, Valencia, Arsenal and AC Milan as well as Zenit St Petersburg and probably Lyon will have play-offs to reach the group stage.

We need four of these teams to not qualify to reach pot two.

Thought we were better off in Pot 3?

Just as long as the rags got the dog and duck, crown and anchor and the reform club, UEFA will no doubt go with it fella ;-)

it can't be harder than last year. the way those teams were "randomly" assembled wont happen again, even uefa would be too embarrassed to fix it again.

This model has Sociedad in as they are currently sitting fourth. They have a very low co-efficient so were cast aside in the play-offs. As long as Juventus remain in Pot 3 i think that we are better where we are. Pot 3 looks on the face of it much stronger than Pot 2.

-- Thu May 16, 2013 9:01 am --

Ha, ran it again this morning, it's becoming an obsession

Group 6 Team
POT16 Man United
POT26 AC Milan
POT36 Ajax
POT46 BATE Borisov

Group 8 Team
POT18 Porto
POT28 CSKA Moscow
POT38 Man City
POT48 Steaua Bucharest

Schalke won their final game so finish 4th. Will have to get through qualifying though. In spain valencia are looking more likely to qualify now. So overall its looking more and more likely that unless the unfancied teams progress through qualifying, we will be in pot 3.

Whether in pot 2 or pot 3 we will be stitched up yet again. If you think of the hardest teams we could come up against that will be it. For the rags, think of the easiest draw (they will want to give Moyes a chance of suceeding) and it will be so.

Top of Pot 3 might actually work out better as as far as I can see, the tendency is for the stronger teams in 1 & 2 to get the weaker teams in 3 & 4. That means the stonger teams in 3 & 4 get the weaker teams in 1 & 2, meaning we might have a better chance of someone like Porto, Benfica or Inter in Pot 1

Didn't we go through this a while back.

It doesn't work like that at all really, does it?

No you take out the teams that Rags and Munich don't want to play and ensure they get weakest sides then match up the rest
