Champions League Haters

Being really honest, I find the small numbers of City fans who claim not to be bothered about the Champions League to be a bit small-minded, parochial and pathetic. It's the biggest club competition in the world for god's sake. The only way as a fan I can ever get close to the Aguero moment would be by winning it.

I'd sacrifice the league right now if it meant winning it this year.
I'm not that bothered by it, you call it a club competition, it's not, its an invitational competition. Cheadle Town can't enter the CL but they could get an invite by finishing 4th in the PL. Its an elitist invitational competition designed to keep those with wealth, wealthy, and give those with wealth the chance to make more wealth at the expense of those without wealth.

Just because I think that, it will not make it mean any less to the players, management, owners of the club. It is probably the pinnacle for them, but they will likely move on in time, I wont, they will go with their memories and I wish them well, but they will not have fulfilled my dreams, they will have fulfilled their own.

See I grew up on tales of the biggest most famous Cup competition of them all, the FA Cup , that is what i want to win every year. That doesn't make me small minded, parochial or pathetic, its what i dreamt about as a kid and it will always have a far bigger place in my heart than some half cocked invitational trophy played for by the rich every season.

In one way, winning the CL is over-rated, as you definitely need luck at key moments, and winning it does not mean you're the best side in Europe ... especially if you haven't even won your own domestic league.

However ... it is revered by fans around the world ... winning it immediately elevates that team to legend status for millions of people around the globe ... and until you win it, fans of rival teams who have won it will beat you over the head with your "failure".

So I feel it really would be massive for City to win it ... would change the perception of City for huge swathes of the world.

way to insult people

Its just his opinion. It’s an interesting question. If you had asked me at the start of the season I’d have said CL this year just to shut everyone up and that it would speed up our development as a club.

Now it would mean United winning the PL so we cant have that can we?

Pep hit the nail on the head.

He said we’re making history in the CL.

We‘ve made history in the PL. The fans want another PL title.

What I do find strange, perhaps it’s a City thing, we don’t go on about doing the English treble and quadruple in 1 season as much as we should do.

A conversation with United fans

I’d obviously like to win the CL as I’d like to win every cup competition we enter, but it’s the league I’d take every year without doubt

yeah but it’s the pinnacle of football the CL, the best of the best, it’s what makes you a truly great club and how you’re considered great in history

oh right, would you rather have 19 league titles and 6 European cups like Liverpool or 20 league titles and 3 European cups like you have ?

definitely our 20 titles, the league is won by the best team and anyone can have a lucky run in a cup competition

Me grinning

When I looked at the poll a few weeks ago, roughly about a third of our 'fans' said that they weren't bothered about the CL. I know that this is not a scientific poll but it may suggest that the minority of fans is quite sizeable.

Like you, DD, I see it as the last box left to tick. A final is unchartered territory. I can't understand why people aren't motivated by winning this competition. I don't like elements within UEFA but, if anything, that strengthens my desire to win the thing.

If we got to the final, I'd do anything to be in Istanbul that weekend. I'd give anything to win it just once. You'd see a lot of people come out of the woodwork for tickets if we got to the final.

Given the choice at the start of a season I’d always put the league first. That’s not to say I don’t want to win the C/ L at some point, and would like 2 or 3. Don’t get the hate for it because its ‘corrupt’ probably the same people say the same about the p/l but still want to win that.
Plus some of the best / nailbiting / frustrating games going either way over the past few years have been C/L. There are some very good teams and players out there over the years to pit ourselves against why wouldn’t you be willing us to come out on top against that opposition.
