Champions League pots

I was hooked with this last season following teams in their domestic leagues, and we ended up in Pot 2 and a Group of death with Dortmund and Ajax from Pots 3 and 4. I forget which club came from which pot now.

Finishing above Dortmund and Real Madrid was a very big ask. Fortunately for Utd, Real Madrid have lost Casillas and Marcelo.

However we should have qualified from the Bayern, Napoli, Villareal group when we were seeded in Pot 3

The seeding is important, but there's still considerable variation amongst the possible outcomes as the last 2 seasons have shown

A shame we aren't in the Europa League right now with the league dead and buried. Assuming we didn't bomb out in the first knockout round we'd be able to improve our coefficient.

How do the points work?

2 points for a win, 1 for a draw in Champions League or Europa League matches (less for qualifiers). Bonus points for making the champions league group stages (4), making the knockouts of the champions league (5 points), and reaching the QF, SF and final of both comps (1 point).

There is a bonus country co-efficient (3-4 points for English sides normally). Last 5 years total points make up the rankings.

So far this season we've got 4 points for making the group stages, 3 points for the 3 draws and 2.4 points country co-efficient.

Look at Chelsea. Pot one team in with Shaktar and Juventus. We just have to perform in the group we get, on paper we should be able to go into battle with any team in Europe. We just need to translate that onto the pitch.

This years group stage draw will be a pain. I've no idea if my heart will take it lol! I really, really hope we get a good group..There is still a long time to go until the draw though, so we will see when the time comes.

Another one spot on. When the draws were made for this season the usual cries of a fix were on here. What I found baffling though is that people didn't appear to realise that NO teams in europe would want to be drawn with us, not when they see who we have in our squad. That still won't change next season because alot of our players would get into the teams of some of the elite anyway. As far as we are concerned it's all about being mentally prepared for Europe, something we appear to be finding difficult in sorting out. Make no mistake though, nobody will want us in their group.

FWIW, if all seasons ended today and there were no shocks in qualifiers the first couple of pots would look something like this.

Pot 1 - Barcelona, Bayern Munich, rags, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Porto, Atletico Madrid, Shaktar Donetsk
Pot 2 - Lyon, Benfica, Marseilles, CSKA Moscow, Manchester City, PSG, Juventus, Ajax

Pot 3 might not be the worst result for us, as even if they win the Champions League, Dortmund will probably be in pot 3.

The likes of Inter, AC Milan, Arsenal and Valencia are pretty close to a qualifying position through their league so things could change pretty quickly.<br /><br />-- Mon Feb 18, 2013 4:40 pm --<br /><br />

Potentially worth up to 21 extra points for us if we made it through to the Europa League.

Last season Villareal were in pot 2 and didn't gain a point in our group. This season Dortmund were in pot 4, won the group and were undefeated

There won't be many teams hoping to draw us in their group whether we're in pot 2 or 3, despite our poor showings over the last two seasons

As long as we are in there will do for me.
Imagine if we came 4th and perhaps was not seeded for the play off game. Seeing the 2 groups we have had so far, we would probably get Real Madrid.
