There's a big luck of the draw attached.

City's problem in the CL is generally getting the short straw with the pot 4 teams. Napoli, Dortmund and Roma were by far the strongest teams in the bottom pot. Last season was easier and allowed City to go through comfortably despite being in a group with Bayern.

You can still end up with Real Madrid and Roma next season even being in pot 1. Liverpool got an easier draw than City this season despite being in a lower pot.

We should devote 100.000000% effort on winning the league this year now imho. Forget the CL this year - we are very unlikely to top the group and then we will be fucked in the knockouts even if we do get through.

So let's not allow the CL this year to distract us from our one and only target: We MUST retain our title and win the league.

So same again next season? Forget the CL and retain title.

Maybe this is the first sign of the cartel power inevitably being weakened. The owners of those clubs can't be happy with this, so, assuming they complained, this must be the first time ever they were ignored..

PSG and Bayern are perfectly happy with this. Pretty much guaranteed pot 1 year after year, unless they flop badly in their domestic leagues.

Seems like the change would apply only to league winners. So the rest would presumably retain the daft coefficient system that rewards clubs like Arsenal and Europa League powerhouses like Schalke and such.

But a step in the right direction! At least will help break up the monotonous and repetitive draws.
