Charging kids board

£300 pm for my 21 year old son. He earns £32,000 which is the highest wage in the household. So I think he does ok.
Jeeeez !!! Our first house cost that. ( mid 80's, Sale ) I was earning, give or take, £7,000 max with o/t and coming out with £5,500. Think the mortgage was £260 ish / mth. Happy days....

Daughter was furious when we asked for 50 quid a week out of her 1500 a month in 2010.Sat her down and showed her all the bills and said do u want to divide by 3?She was shocked agreed to the 50 a week in a flash. Now earns 60 grand a year and is not shy at helping us out.Just need to show them how much things cost.

Daughter was paying $700/mo to sublet a bedroom in 3BR place in Chicago. Even had to share a bathroom with a “hairy” fella, because the Lessee wanted the big bedroom & bathroom to herself, of course.

She moved back in after a bait & switch landlord caused her to pull the plug on a move to her own place.

We charged her the same $700/mo, free utilities (electric, heat, A/C, cable TV, high speed internet), and use of a vehicle whenever needed. She never blinked.

Wife & I decided we’d save it up for her as a move out gift, so it could be a nice deposit on her own place or for some decent furniture, etc. Pandemic stopped all that when she lost her job!

You can still afford to save it up for her, whether she’s working or not!

So how much should you and do you charge them for the privilege . Stepson is an apprentice electrician and since he started work me and Mrs Pabs have charged him £60 p/m after new year he got a substantial rise, with this in mind his rent has now gone upto £200 p/m . We told him the good news tonight and he’s took it like there’s been a death in the family. For this he gets a nice comfy bed , hot meal served nightly, washing and ironing , internet ( his bedroom looks like showcase cinema ) , packed lunches and numerous other sundries plus he does jack shit round the house, are we being unreasonable to what we charge him
Takes me back. My pals sister tried to pull a fast one like that. her da said, if you can get all of what you get here for that fucking pittance, tell me where and I will fucking move in. £200 a month is a steal. In fact, throw the **** out and I will move in for £400a month.

bump
daughter was renting a flat with boyfreind, they were not getting anywhere paying rent out every month, so me and the mrs agreed to let them live here at the house while they save up for a deposit on there own place,,both in very good jobs, they will be buying there own food etc, whats fair for chipping in,the figure of £250 p/m is floating about, does that seem about right
I reckon £400 pcm is more than fair pal. That is only £50 a week each and chicken feed in this day and age, especially considering they both have good jobs!

To put things into perspective, I was paying my mum 50 quid a week in the mid 80s when i was only clearing about £120.

Tell 'em it's £400 a month or they'll soon out on their arse; )

Throw a bottle of decent malt in and it’s a deal ; )
