Chelsea Thread 2014/15

I think Kolorov is also very under-rated. He's brilliant going forward - his crossing is unbelievable.

However, Filipe Luis is as good as there is at left back. Very, very good player.

I also think a lot of people are underestimating Diego Costa. He clearly wasn't fit at the end of the season in those Champion's League games and at the World Cup. When fully fit, he was superb last season.

I still think he's a level below Lewandowski/Suarez/Aguero, but he's miles better than what Chelsea had last season.

He's actually that underrated that 2 of 3 posters doesn't even spell his name correctly as his name is Kolarov. :) I agree with you though.

To sjk2008, I think Kolarov just suits perfectly to our current style. Of course, it wouldn't have been much worse using Filipe Luis, who offers a similar threat going forwards, but I still can't imagine a better crosser of the ball than Kolarov. It's nothing unexpected that he had the most assists last season from all defenders in the PL (along with Zabaleta).

And those 3 strikers you mentioned for us wouldn't have scored as many goals as they did without the width that Kolarov and Zabaleta both provided. Like I said the fact that Azpi doesn't get forward has a negative effect on Chelsea in an attacking sense. Kolarov isn't a 'great' defender but he is more than adequate and is great going forward, but he would look exposed in Mourinho's ultra defensive/negative approach.

If you asked any City fan who they would rather have at LB, im sure most would have Kolarov over Azpilicueta, and the fact that we have won a double and Chelsea have won nothing with both players playing their part respectively speaks volumes.

The last paragraph comes of no surprise to me. Of course you'd rather pick your own left back, especially after winning the double. On the flipside I'd say if you asked a supporter of the other 18 PL clubs I would guess they'd sway towards Azplicueta and/or Filipe Luis, but I appreciate why you would go with Kolorov and I'm certainly not going to criticise that!

I'm not overly in agreement with the bit in bold, though.

I can't see how you can bring Filipe Luis into this when he hasn't kicked a ball in the PL yet. He has been quality for A Madrid but he wouldn't be the first player to come from abroad and find it difficult in the PL, so perhaps we should hold fire before we start declaring him the joint best left back in the league.

I guess its horses for courses, if Azpi played LB for us last season we wouldn't have scored the amount of goals that we scored and my guess is that would have prevented us winning the league. It might sound a bit narrow minded, but he was pivotal in us opening teams up and his crossing is the best in the league. If he played for Chelsea, whats to say he wouldn't have created more chances for the likes of Eto'o and Torres? Yes they aren't the best strikers around at the moment but the main problem Chelsea had last season was opening teams up, Kolarov would have done a better job of that than Azpi did, which resulted in Chelsea winning nothing.

I brought Filipe Luis into the conversation because I was putting out what I believed to be the best XI from the two squads, regardless of whether he played in the PL last season. Courtois didn't play in the PL last season but I'd still pick him over Hart any day of the week.

If you're comfortable picking two players that haven't even kicked a ball for their team yet then thats your choice fella

If Luis proves himself in the PL as the best LB then thats fine, but until then im not sure we can dress him up as the best LB in the league

Azpi isn't even the best RB in the league so how can he be the best LB :)

Not withstanding sjk that full back is an easy position to play if you neglect the attacking side, it becomes a lot more difficult when balancing attack and defence, as the position requires.

They bought Lukaku for around 16-18m 2 years ago now selling him for 25-28m to everton according to reports. and he was out on loan two times so probabnly didnt cost Chelsea even his wages and some smaller loan fees were also paid to them for him (Wba, Everton).

Once again they sell a player for profit they dont even need or has no big future at their club in next 2-3 years.

I think even they did not expect this when they decided to go for buying 4-5 young but huge talents that all will turn out pretty well business wise, like De Bruyne, Curtois, Lukaku , Piazon (he was a star for Vitesse on loan last season) etc.

They have many very good younger players and they loan them out to Europe regularly like we started to do it with Lopes, Zuculini next maybe.

They also use Vitesse as a "reserve club", they send them 3-4-5 younger players per year to improve play in Eredivisie.

Mourinho brought Drogba in to take the pressure and spot light of Costa also he hopes it will bring fear to the poorer teams in the league as we as Drogba is great at fooling referees into given him free kicks! So no-Brainer really for Mourinho to bring him in

It's defeatist though from the start. We now see Lukaku at 20 0r 21 off to Everton whilst Chelsea get a 36 year old to sit on the bench. I just can't understand why Maureen doesn't rate Lukaku.

Maybe he's a down-payment on Barkley.
