Chelsea Thread 2014/15

We had our charity pre season match against both Besiktas and Fenerbahce today. They played each other for 45 minutes, then we played them for 45 minutes each. The unusual mini tournament format was to raise money for the families of the Soma mining disaster. We won the first half 2-0 v Fenerbahce and lost the second half 1-0 to Besiktas. Played very well in both though. Costa scoring a brilliant individual goal. All of our new signings look like they're settling in quickly.

We played:

--------- Cech ---------

Ivan - Cahill - Terry - Azpili

----- Matic - Fabregas -----

Schurrle -- Oscar -- Hazard

---------- Costa ----------

With a gradual complete switch up over the second half. Very pleased with the performance, especially in attack. We look transformed.

How does it feel to have a striker again? ;) also what did you think of the Drogba in Lukaku out move?

I would have preferred Drogba stayed retired. His last kick of a ball for us won the Champions League. Not sure what he can contribute now at 36, and he looked every bit that age in preseason. I had high hopes for Lukaku but he's got a terrible attitude. He wasn't willing to fight for his place. The problem is now we don't have any reliable backup for Costa.

Lukaku was still raw. Poor first touch and often loses possession. I can understand why Mourinho did not start him. he needs to play so it was logical for him to move on.

Costa looks key to Chelsea's season and the other issue will be the central defence. Terry looks vulnerable. Can someone cover for him?

Mourinho didn't have much of a chance to play him. He requested the loan last year and left this year. I think he expected to be first choice or something, and wasn't pleased when we signed Costa. He could have stayed last year and beat out Torres/Eto'o/Ba on his own merits. Oh well I wish him well, but we were looking much healthier with Costa and Lukaku. Now we're relying heavily on Costa not getting injured/suspended.

Edit: I forgot to mention Terry. Not sure why you think he looks vulnerable. He's had a new lease on life under Mourinho. He and Cahill were fantastic last season, hence having the best defensive record in the league. I suspect next summer we'll be looking at a new top CB, or perhaps promoting one since we've got quite a few strong CB prospects depending on how Zouma develops, but this season I foresee no issues there. His only problem is keeping fit with his back problems.
