Chelsea Thread - 2022/23 | Pochettino confirmed as new manager

Current positions:
Brighton 4th - playing extremely well and organised despite negative net spend, financially sound, composed and organised management structure. Small wages.

Chelsea 6th - playing crap, disorganised despite massive net spend, financially only just out of massive owner debt, disheveled and disorganised US management structure. Massive wages.

I wonder what might persuade Potter to leave Brighton…
The challenge. Chelsea is one of the biggest (and riskiest) managerial jobs in Europe. Potter has to test himself at the next level at some point. He is an ambitious person.

Potter's a good manager but it's one thing doing well at Brighton, quite another to take the step up to a team like us or Chelsea. He's got a nice group of players at Brighton who aren't that well known and work hard for each other. What works for Brighton might not work for Chelsea.

Doing well at Brighton may get the players a better gig but it's a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The players listen to him and have responded well. Potter and his players are reliant on each other but there's a load of players at Chelsea who probably feel they have made it and have little to learn, particularly from a man who's never won anything.

That's not to say he won't do well but expectations and egos are bigger plus the players at Chelsea simply may not suit the way he wants to play.

Brighton have maxed out, if they were ever to get in Europe it will kill them like it did with Burnley.

Potter is a younger Roy Hodgson.

Could you not make this point about every manager in history before they took a big job?

Shame if they get Potter. He would've been a good candidate to replace Pep eventually. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if deep down he'd rather wait and take the reigns at City. A far better run club and a more suited playing style.

There has been a dressing room problem at Chelsea for some time. So when a relatively unknown manager takes over some established foreign ego's.. sorry, players, it sometimes doesn't work.
If he decides to take it, the worst thing that could happen is he pays more tax. Eighteen months if he's lucky or he turns into the messiah.
I don't think he'll take it but he probably will. It's the chance for him to compete on a 'level playing field' with Pep. Must be tempting.

He has to make the step up eventually. No one can expect him to win everything at Brighton and walk into a top 6 job with a box full of trophies to put on his desk.

Ultimately it's up to him to make the players buy into what he's saying, and the ownership to give him the authority he needs.

Chelsea's players aren't hermits, they absorb the football media as much as anyone and they'll be as in tune to how highly rated Potter is as any fan. Not to mention they'll all have had to play against his Brighton side - and only won 1 of the last 5 games.

Cucurella will presumably have a lot of good to say about him, and the English contingent will speak to people like Ben White. Tariq Lamptey is probably still close to all the academy players.

The main thing I think he needs is a 3+ year contract and an understanding that it might take a season for things to get going. If that's the kind of project Todd Boehly is interested in, it's a great appointment for everyone.

I think he'd be able to handle the pressure. The thing he'll struggle most with is the difference in how the clubs are ran. Chelsea are a shitshow and Brighton are very well-run. Managers don't take jobs if they feel they can't work with the group of players at their new club and this would be no different. If he takes it then he thinks he can make it work but he'll notice a massive difference above him I reckon.

You'd assume he knew that too - given he's turned down other jobs in the past - so it'll be about whether he can 'afford' to turn down such a big job (Champions League, league contenders etc) or if he's confident enough he'll get another chance in the future.

Personally hope he doesn't go there. Think he's fantastic.
