City Firm?!?

Great post Billy. Middle class kids don't understand that football violence was a big part of Youth Culture back in the day.

but we seem to have 2 very distinct categories of punters on here. Those that were and those that were not. The ones that were can tolerate those that werent, whereas...

It was hard to follow city - away ceratinly, in the 80s without getting involved. Not exclusively I grant you - but futy was with the lads and it lead to violence etc.

To me - they were great days that will never come back. City were poor - but the match was a great day out for loads of reasons. Nowadays its very differant experience. Better in some ways, but no where near what it once was.

Im not questioning the credentials of everyone - but do get a sense that many of those who hold a derogatory opinion - just dont actually know what they are talking about. They are however more than happy to sound off.

As I said in my first post - dont like it? move on.

If people want to talk about it then talk about it, however I'm also entitled to my opinion that it's monotinous, tedious, fucking dull and glorifies something we should ALL be looking to disassociate with football in general and City specifically.

That is bastard mental where can you get one of those super killer cats from?

Didsbury..you know your out of the scene when you dont get a phone call or text friday night before a derby game!

I know plenty of "shirts" as well who have been glad to see a few of City lads over the years outside the scoreboard or the annie road...in fact i know plenty of shirters who willingly had a dabble themselves against united.

I guess the guardian reading trendies can condone it or tut about it, but the whole culture has had a massive influene on city, its fan base, the songs they sing, the clothes they wear, the fanzine sproduced. Most footie fans dress similar these day but in the late seventies you could tell Manchester and Scouse fans apart from the doc martin wielding masses...to an extent you still can today...though its alo more merged.

Dave Haslams book, Manchester England is a good one..and Colin Blaines Grafters aint bad if youre interested more in the culture side.Ive still got some old copies of The End magazine from the original Liverpool scallies...makes funny reading now..the first reall football/culture fanzine anywhere in England..great interviews with peter hooton and the annie road boys.

Bring back dunlop greenflash, suede boots, kagools...ACR at the factory...great days!

ACR are still going, Billy, and still brilliant. Factory and City always had close links, despite Tony Wilson.

Can you remember those leather tops everyone wore for a bit? Liverpool and Manchester wore a different style. I can also remember dungarees and flares coming in for a bit in the early 80s.

Do you know, I was thinking today about what happened to fashion for working class lads? These days they just look like scruffy pasty pricks with their tracksuit bottoms and hoods. At least in the 80s we tried to look good.

I used to go to the russell/factory every weekend..mixture of punks and City/united boys, also the mayflower, the old cavendish house poly building. My highlightsts were Joy Division, the Damned and Slaughter and the Dogs (Wythenshawes finest..Wayne Barret was a big blue)..where have all the boot boys gone being the main floor filler! Still remember New Orders firts gig, the Hoax, Armed Force(Dentons Finest) , the Hamsters, Mick Hucknalls shitty first band .. the Frantic Elevators, The Police at the Free trade hall in 78/79, 200 scallies watching U2 at the old salford uni students union....fuck Im rambling now!!

I remember dungerees and pink tee-shirts! Also the flares were flared cords (usually beige/brown).
In those days the way you dressed was part of the scene - you wanted to look better than the opposition. I used to spend every penny I had in Hurleys. Then it was all about standing out. Now - with cameras everywhere its the opposite - all about concealing identity by looking exactly the same (hence all in black/hoods, etc.).
