Well if we dont talk about the past, that just leaves the present and the future!!

I like the past...we won something!

What would be interesting, well for me anyway, would be a poll of people on here who have ever been involved with City's so called firm.

I think people would be astonished by how many people have been involved in some shape or form over the years. I personally know at least 15-20 posters on here who have been involved. They may have grown out of it now, but would still class themselves as one of City's lads...and perhaps defend the colours in certain circumstances when forced to (for example attacked in a pub).

Next time your in the ground look around you at the scallies, casuals, boys or whatever you want to call them...theres thousands of them, and at some point most will have been involved in a football related tear up whilst professing to support City. Its part of Manchester youth culture from the late seventies with the Perry boys onwards and helped define what you see on the streets of manchester now, fashion wise and music wise. It all has its roots in the terrace culture associated with violence and grafting.

Never a truer word spoken.
Thread of the week Billy.

I'll give that a whirl shadygiz...looks a belter... I didnt even realise ACR were still going...I know more about Thomas the Tank engine than music these days!

City's firm these days doesn't exist as an organised unit, but the lads are still out there. I believe over 200 have banning orders. Until a couple of years ago City still turned out good sized (100+) firms for the odd big game - United for one and for some reason nearly always the 3rd round of the FA cup. But the banning orders have had an effect and noone really wants to put their head over the parapet and organise things.

Hooliganism is largely dead now. On the rare occasion there is an organsied fight it is, say 20 v 20 and many of them are in their 40s. Although there are young firms around at many clubs, too. City have a little one.

In the main, the police won the war on football hooliganism in the 90s and it is largely gone.

Spot on, thankfully.

Now as the father of a nine year old boy, I wish I could turn the clocks back. Did a lot of things that I regret now. Don't even like to think back as it almost makes me feel physically ill.

46 by the way! ;-)

I used to go to the russell/factory every weekend..mixture of punks and City/united boys, also the mayflower, the old cavendish house poly building. My highlightsts were Joy Division, the Damned and Slaughter and the Dogs (Wythenshawes finest..Wayne Barret was a big blue)..where have all the boot boys gone being the main floor filler! Still remember New Orders firts gig, the Hoax, Armed Force(Dentons Finest) , the Hamsters, Mick Hucknalls shitty first band .. the Frantic Elevators, The Police at the Free trade hall in 78/79, 200 scallies watching U2 at the old salford uni students union....fuck Im rambling now!!

Did a few of those myself....remember The Cramps, they supported The Police at the FTH, they were shite and got booed off stage. And The Damned at Cavendish House circa 1980 was a hostile night out. Got to see Joy Division at one of their first sessions at a Village Hall out near Lymm if I remember rightly. The Hacienda when it first opened was brill, until the "pop" took over. Another excellent night was The Charlatans at Granada studios where we blagged it in. Also did U2 at a few venues before they were famous, Cavendish, FTH................all the lads that went to the football in those days were also to be seen on these nights out. As was said by others football and music went hand in hand in the 80s.

Also anyone go to Cyprus Tavern............it used to be mental in there...........this extract is taken from another site:

The Cyprus Tavern was legendary in Manchester . It was the first night club to allow students in the late 70s . It was a bit of a rough and ready place and became a focal point for Manchesters football hooligan scene in particular Man Citys "young guvnors" .In 1991 it became the Granby, Manchesters first late night bar . It was frequented by many celebrities including Steve Coogan It finally closed its doors in August 2000 a victim of its own success as all the big beer companies had cottoned on to the idea of late night bars . The reason I know so much about the Cyprus Tavern, my father opened it in 1967 and I became owner manager in 1989 having completed my degree at the toast rack in Fallowfield

Like where you're coming from Billy. Was a good mate of Armed Force's singer, Muppet, at school and he was a big blue. Got me into going to watch city, the little git! One of the O'neils in the band was also a big blue. Think they were all, or majority, were from the Moss though. Denton's 'finest' was Mick Hucknall??
