City Football Group (CFG) buy into Chinese club Sichuan Jiuniu FC (from Chengdu)

I’m not racist but that teeny tiny yella fellas joke was very funny.

Sheffield United actually already own a team in Chengdu. How odd is that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_Tiancheng_F.C.

The above link doesn't seem to work, as the final full stop isn't recognised as being part of the URL and without that full stop, it can't find the page. Anyway, from looking at the intended link by pasting it into my browser, I see the following.

The team is no longer in existence but had quite a chequered history after they were taken over by Sheffield United at the end of 2005 and rebranded as Chengdu Blades. They won promotion to the top flight in 2007, finishing in a highest position of 7th in 2009 but being relegated after a match-fixing scandal. In 2010, they were promoted again, at which point Sheffield United sold the club to a Chinese company and a company owned by the Blades chairman Kevin McCabe as joint owners.

They were then relegated in 2011, sold by the previous joint owners to a new Chinese company in 2013 and finished in a relegation position in the second tier in 2014. According to Wiki, they then went bust: "the club was officially dissolved on 4 January 2015 and was subsequently de-registered by the Chinese Football Association on 31 January 2015 due to unpaid salaries to players and staff". Their crowds dropped steadily from over 12,000 in the first top-flight season in 2008 to below 2,000

There is another team, which was relocated from Nanjing in time for the 2016 season: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_Better_City_F.C. - this link has the same issue as the one above; if you're that bothered, copy and paste it into your browser, but the salient points are below so you don't have to make the effort.

After the move, they were first called Chengdu Qbao and played in the third tier, being relegated in 2017 owing to financial problems (it appears the owner was involved in a financial scandal). They've now been bought by the Chengdu Better City Investment Group and renamed accordingly.

The Chengdu city administrative division of Sichuan Province has a population of over 14 million: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sichuan#Administrative_divisions

So you'd think that there's scope for a CFG club to do a bit better than either of those two have managed.
