City to expand Etihad to 62,000?

It would depend on whether the Football Licensing Authority allows more than a one person per seat space allocation like in Germany. Celtic’s capacity remained the same with their safe standing area because it still remained as one person per seat allocated.
That’s the way it has been described as part of the recent parliamentary debate. If it becomes a reality that’s how it will be. Each safe standing position will have the same footprint as a seat.

How've they come up with that conclusion? Rail seating INCREASES capacity in a stand by around 1/3. As they allow around one extra person to stand in a space of two 'seats' where two other people are with odd exceptions like end of rows etc.

In fact rules state that if the concourse can handle this volume of people you can fit 2 people in safe standing to every one seat of rail seating. But they usually just go for the 2>3 rule.

eg. Hanover - 3000 rail seats > 5700 safe standing.

At Dortmund; "The ratio between seats and fans is approx 1:1.7, meaning that even when the Yellow Wall is full, there’s no threat of overcrowding. This type of accommodation is not only safe, but also welcoming and hospitable for all supporters."

It doesn't help at all in a singing block when non singers stand between, it puts people off singing. You notice how when we score the whole block sings, then that's it its down to the 100 or so that carry it on.

I still say we sing wrong songs and try to pack 15 different songs in 15 minutes which confuses the block. If the block is quite it needs a long song carried on. Fans frustrated by a quite block start belting out "stand up if you love city" "bluemoon" "who needs gold" "oh ballotelli" all back to back without a break between. All it does is cause confusion and even less singing.

The good ultras that come to our stadium have a minute with no song then a build up to singing, clapping and carrying it on for a few rounds. This builds up momentum and gives fans a chance to join in. As well as singers grouping together we need to have a change from these short bursts of songs and 20 songs in 10 minutes.

Good post Trevor. I’ve noticed that getting everyone to be quiet before starting a new song is a key part of the ultras toolbox.

When I’ve been to Italy he fans will sing the same song for five or 10 minutes. Incidentally, one of Atalanta’s main anthems is their version of the “Sound of Silence”, that they build up in volume. Sometimes I think many of our fans feel they have to run out of breath after 2 verses / repeats when we could keep going a lot longer until the rest of the ground joins in.

Credit to 1894 on all the great efforts. I know it must feel like climbing a mountain at times.

It also depends in part on whether the Stand has been designed with Safe Standing in mind (like the Yellow Wall) or if Safe Standing is an after thought.

I have 3 issues with the Ultras.

1. You are told/promted what to sing. You aren't allowed to start a chant. You have no say in what chant get's started or when. Only the Ultras at the front can do that.
2. There are breaks in the chanting while the Ultras at the front decide whatto chant next. Napoli fans at the Etihad was the worst example of that I have ever seen. Stop. Start. Discuss. Organise. Wait. Chant. Repeat.
3. Some of the Ultra groups carry on singing regardless of a goal being conceded by their team. Even though it sounds loud, impressive and I'm sure the players appreciate the continued support, it's continual and monotonous. There is no emotion shown by the fans. They are like programmed robots. The German fans are the worst for that.

It would be great if we could create some sort of happy medium at the Etihad.

If anybody wants to start a song in any stadium, all they need to do it’s belt it out and hope people join in. Most people don’t do that. I hear what you are saying, but having a group who sing songs, make up new ones help.

When is the last time you made up a new song that all the fans in the stadium sing whilst bouncing?

You may have them but I don’t know.

Standing section is safer than sitting. I have fallen forward a few times when important goals went in. This does not happen in the standing section.

It makes a difference. Particularly in big games.

With no research on this, I think if it was introduced in England clubs would do it by ripping out the old seats and putting in rail seats bolted on to the existing concrete steps - that would mean no change in capacity.

Only way you could increase capacity would be by replacing and reconfiguring the terrace so that say you had 50 rows before, you now have 70. I can't see any clubs relaying their stands. might be some scope for some clubs who are extending grounds to plan for it.

They can give you a free pair of bean tins and ball of string with the standing season card for the person behind to stand on. Job jobbed.
