City v Ipswich 1981 FA Cup Semi

peterboro was scary ,packed us in like sardines & lucky no casualties behind the goal that day !
Yeah it was crazy.. Like you say packed in like sardines... Was kicking off after the game walking back to the station.. Lots of pikeys were there.. Something to do with a big fair or summat.. Went to every game in both Cup runs.. Was a brilliant day at Villa Park.. Blues everywhere.

Aged 19 travelled from Northern Ireland overnight ferry to Liverpool and train straight Birmingham and straight back after. Was only a little un (still am) so right at front of holte end so I could see. Still one of my favourite city days out

I was convinced we were going all the way in 1981, it was the 100th Cup Final and it just seemed right, went to every away game by special and every one was a great day out, remember going to Everton, we had about 7 specials that day, we stayed in the bar at Victoria station getting pissed until the last train left, we didn't care once we got to Everton, they were weary because we had so many at the game. The Semi Final was special, we outnumbered them, 2 to 1, we knew it was going to be tough, but when we scored, bedlam, I was in the Middle of the Holte end, with my Brother and my mates, those were the days City fans stuck together we went as One.
40 years ago, I was only 23 then, still hate Spurs anyone of my generation will understand, they were a buch of xxxx

I was 15 and went with my cousin, Dad, Uncle and their mates.
I remember the draw and was disappointed when we got Ipswich, who were a great team.
The day was the most nervous i had felt ever, but being in the holt end was a great experience. We watched Paul Power's freekick come toward us and the joy was unlike anything i had experienced. The noise, the singing, everyone being happy, it was a brilliant day and i'll never forget it.

I was 17 years old..

You needed a voucher from a match book to buy a ticket, I didn't have a match ticket book as I couldn't afford one back then..

I paid on the gate..

My mate had one so I took his voucher to work and photocopied it.

It was a lime green or yellow colour (from memory) and work had the exact A4 paper colour. They also had a John bull type number press which was the same font as the original numbers on the authentic matchbook voucher..

I made my own voucher, made up a 4 figure number, not too far away from the original voucher as I thought they may be different colours for different batches of numbers and I'd only get one shot at it..

I cut the A4 sheet to the exact voucher size and I can even remember rounding off the 4 corners with a pair of scissors..

I showed it to my mate and asked him to pick the original one out of the two I had in my hand, he picked the copy out as the original.. result..!

I folded and screwed up the copy several times and the following day went to the ticket office at Maine Road and presented it with my money..

I was expecting to be told to bugger off but I got a ticket..

I'd been to every match during the cup run and was chuffed although feeling guilty that I got a ticket for the semi..

(I'm not a bad person but I know I did wrong m'lud)

Tense game where we were put under the cosh by a great Ipswich team..

I was standing right behind Paul's shot and knew it was in before it hit the back of the net..

Absolute bedlem ensued..

Brilliant day, never to be forgotten..!

Went to both games in the final too..

Memories that never leave you..!
My uncle had a visit from the police for the 1955 cup final. In those days vouchers in the programme were just a simple black number in a white box very easy to reproduce. My Dad and uncle were one voucher short for a ticket and my uncle was manager at a printing company in Sharston so he forged the missing voucher. Unfortunately the match with that voucher had been postponed and believe it or not City reported him to the police.

A special day as nobody thought City stood a chance.
Went with a coach from Fallowfield that stopped off on the way down to Villa Park at a pub in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Seem to vaguely remember us passing the official City coach on the way down on the M6 ?
We spent a fortune in the boozer, so the Landlord invited us to return on the way back.
We certainly did return and drank the pub almost dry.
Villa Park was very well organised as don't remember seeing hsrdly any Ipswich fans.
As said earlier, Ipswich Town were an excellent team who I thought should have won the League in '81.
Glad for them they won the EUFA Cup, as they probably shaded the Semi Final against City.
Kevin Beattie was Ipswich’s version of Colin Bell, a great player devastated by injuries. He almost dragged them level single handed, had a brilliant game in defeat

Your right he was a cracking centre half ,think he died a few years ago .

I was born on this day 40 years ago.

My Dad said it was the best day ever. Think he meant the City win. :)
Just thinking mate being being born in 1981 puts you at 15/16 in the ninties when we ' were dropping thru the divisions my mate's kid's at the time got a torrid time from the red shit at school they stood tall and fortunately have had their rewards in the last 10 year's a generation that stood the toughest test in the history of our Great club and a generation that command's my upmost respect
