Jacks ol´fella

Was hard because kicking people all he could do. In terms of striking fear into opponents, well he looked like a Geography teacher, so I guess youd only be really afraid of him if youd had some PTSD following an altercation with a thrown black board rubber during school years.
I do remember him crashing into a united player during a derby. (cant remember who but thought it was nice at the time)
Also looked nothing like his famous nephew. I’m not talking Jack here. Answers on a postcard.

Not seen curly wurley mentioned anywhere, not sure if known but he’s like a 5th/6th Dan in jujitsu, which means he’s a fucking ninja, thus would kick the shit out of anyone mentioned on this list!
Game as fuck Curle mate ;-)

If we're talking about players who were tough/hard as nails, as opposed to the "gobshite hard men", off the top of my head from what I've seen and what I know :-

Dave Watson
Mike Doyle
Nicky Reid
Gerry Gow
Keith Curle
Eric Nixon
Andy Morrison
Nigel De Jong
Vincent Kompany
Pablo Zabaleta

Whilst I wouldn't say Dennis Tueart was a traditional "Hard man", he was a feisty little sod.

Kompany, a gentleman who always tried to approach every game with dignity and respect but was hard as nails and never stepped away from an altercation. Him setting the standard against Liverpool screaming at Salah when he tried to get him sent off should not be forgotten.

Also, as he has touched upon himself, anyone of color growing up in the area of belgium he did had to be as hard as they come. Often had to fight his way home

No disrespect but Scott Sinclair would look a hard man shouting at Salah.

The hard man in these can tend to be someone who never backed down always looked to cause trouble etc.

But not backing down on a football field is easy, you know very rarely you are getting anything other then a push and if you did get hit, your team would thank you for it.

For me the Vinny and Ruben model of simply being composed and calm (however you know they have it in their locker if needed) over the more scrappy doo type Roy Keane Hardman.

Saying all that Big Dunc the protection of a football pitch or not, couldn’t see me squaring up with him.

I reckon Fernandinho knows how to have a dance.

This.. can’t believe so few mentions.. unassuming looking and pretty slight of build.. but make no mistake… he’s absolute nails. If I liken his on field spikiness to an episode outside a pub he certainly wouldn’t be “that guy” noising off and making a fuss without any action. He would just lay you out with no warning.. then look down smile at you and walk off into the night.
