CL League Phase Draw 2025/26 | Fixtures (pg 32)

Just answering my own question but after deciding to travel without a ticket I suddenly became eligible for the revised criteria.

If I had followed the club advice and waited until 10am this morning then I could have taken advantage of Easyjet's Manchester-Nice-(Tuesday-Thursday) return flights for just £928.12

My loss!
Or you could go on the day of the game and return the following day for £125 , going via Geneva from Manchester on easyjet and returning via dublin on ryanair.
Gets into Nice at 1330pm
Not ideal for most but it cuts down on costs if you're on a tight budget.

No surprise to me whatsoever with such an antiquated criteria system.

Those top pointers (myself included)
have been going for so long that they can now pick and choose their fixtures and still be eligible for a ticket for the Old Trafford derby

Liverpool's system for the CL is far fairer and their demand is higher

Meanwhile, the Monaco game is less than a fortnight away and the vast majority of the City fanbase are still not eligible
It's not the easiest to get to either
The ticket distribution system we have is the envy of every other club. People with the most points get priority.

I would make some tweaks to the points system though; reintroduce getting points for each game attended, limit the time period your points covers to a rolling 5 or 6 years, and introduce a small % of tickets which need to be collected in destination. The last suggestion would not be needed for games where names are printed on tickets and an ID check takes place - ie Italy.

I'd also like to see some transparency from the club to say x number of tickets went to points, hospitality, staff, OSC etc.

Gauging the level of interest is inherently difficult and if they had dropped it too quickly and people had missed out then there would be complaints. They reacted and have dropped it quickly to give people as much time as they can.

Your second paragraph makes my exact point

Everton have a rolling system which still recognises loyalty but doesn't discriminate against younger supporters.

City's current system is great for rewarding those fans who attended York,.but not so good for anyone who was born after 1998.

After the defeat in Lisbon last year I was talking to one of City's legendary high pointers who had travelled to all of City away European games in 78-79 and was still a regular

It was him who first pointed out the farce of the current system and that over the next few years he could stop going to all the away games, but still quality for a derby ticket.

I read your post as a criticism of the club for not opening up the criteria quicker and advocating for the system that Liverpool use. Having spoken to a couple of Liverpool fans that try to go home and away they both said ours is a better and fairer distribution system. Asking the club to select a random game that you needed to have attended seems like a strange process to me. Someone goes to every game for two years but misses that particular one can't get a semi final ticket because someone else attended one game in two years but it happened to be the one the club chose? Appreciate that's an exaggeration but that's essentially the process.

Seems as though we both agree the points system could do with some minor tweaks, but I just don't think we need to reinvent the wheel on distribution (priority should be based on points in my opinion).

Conscious of derailing the thread though so happy to agree to disagree.

Monaco is less than a fortnight away and we still haven't sold our allocation
Speed of communication is critically important and yet the majority of City's fanbase are still not eligible for a ticket

I'm assuming that we've both got a ticket so yeah see you there.

Not looked this time but we flew to Marseille

Flights from Edinburgh Tuesday to Thursday £200 return
Decent flight times too

Each team that reaches the final of the Champions League will receive €18.5million, with the winners gaining an additional €6.5million. That is not the complete amount a club can receive, though.
Clubs are also awarded the following in the run-up to the final of the competition:
  • Finish in the top of the League Phase: €2 million each
  • Finished between ninth and 16th: €1 million each
  • Knockout round play-offs: €1m per club
  • Round of 16: €11m per club
  • Quarter-finals: €12.5m per club
  • Semi-finals: €15m per club

I get your point, but as a pedantic git I'll just mention that the points system was implemented round about the time we moved from Maine Road so attending the game at Bootham Crescent wouldn't generate any points.

Those numbers are missing a big chunk of info in terms of the League Phase where each of the 36 clubs receives €18.62m simply for qualifying.
There is then prize money of €2.1m for every win and €700k for every draw. And there is money distributed based on final position in the league table starting at €275k for 36th place. The team finishing top of the League Phase is going to earn a lot more than €2m when the money for winning and drawing games is added to that. Likewise with the teams finishing in the top 16.

Perhaps you can enlighten me then as I sort-of knew that, but couldn't remember exactly how the old criteria was revised/amended

We definitely didn't all sort on zero points because there was still some sort of pecking order, whereby those fans who'd been travelling away throughout the dark days were top of the pile.

I genuinely can't remember and it's not even a criticism of the club because I attended all those games and subsequently benefited when the new system was announced

If I remember right all regular season ticket holders had the same chance and you queued for tickets.

A lot of the bigger clubs got caught out last year, taking the first stage a little too easy.
The money for CWC is staggering and the bigger teams need to be in it.
I can see us trying to finish as high as possible in the CL group stages and build up enough points in order to overtake either liverpool or arsenal in the CWC rankings.
After last seasons poor results, we may need to win one of the next CL's in order to qualify for the next CWC

Yeah I think that was the case until around the Joe Royle era when the demand far exceeded the supply, particularly for those small grounds in the third tier.

I seem to recall some kind of priority system then added (regular season ticket holders who've attended 5 away games etc)

Also I've just found a letter from City advising me that everyone's points would be doubled for the 03/04 season

However I can't remember how or from what starting date those points had been allocated

Yeah I was just being sarcastic about the most direct route mate.

I'm going via Gatwick
Not ideal but good flight times and far cheaper than Manchester

Still having that letter ought to mean the club should gift you an additional 10k points as a reward for hoarding City related communications for over 20 years!

I've still got the Swales reply from my complaint about City playing in a totally unnecessary all- yellow kit at Highbury in 89

"REST ASSURED THAT MANCHESTER CITY WILL NEVER PLAY IN YELLOW AGAIN"

Even that was a fucking lie!

How much is the tv money on top of that mate?

The CL TV money is handed out primarily on performance. Each country has a ‘TV pool’ calculated using a formula that takes into account a number of factors - the amount paid by its broadcasters for the rights and the UEFA coefficients of the clubs are two of those. The pool of money is then split between that country’s teams following the conclusion of the competition. Last season’s shares for the English clubs were:
Arsenal €118m
Liverpool €98m
Villa €84m
City €76m
Note that Liverpool received more than Villa despite going out of the competition a round earlier - that’s a consequence of having a much better coefficient.
This season the TV money available to the English clubs (a total of around €375m - same as last year) will be diluted considerably by the pot having to be split six ways.

Appreciated, thanks

I think when we renewed our season ticket when we moved to the Etihad we got 1500 pts pretty sure that's when pts system started not 100% though.
