Cole Palmer

A moron? Man just tripled his salary. Lol. He is lots of things, but a moron isn't one of them.
In the short term yes he has, but he's not going to develop in the long term as good a player at Chelsea as he would have at City.

Either way he's going to spend a lot of the upcoming season sat on the bench.

Much as many of us would love to see local talent and/or blues progress to our first team, I think the reality is that despite the fact we have access to the pick of the crop, whilst we operate at the level we currently do and with the business model we do, Phil will be the very much the exception rather than the rule. One every 3 or 4 seasons would be a very decent return. Hopefully Rico or McAtee will be the next to properly establish himself .

Even if others do turn out to be a superstar and comes back to bite us on the bum it still doesn't mean on balance it was the wrong thing to let them go at the time. The best we can do is wish them an injury free career with good people around them and that it goes well, with the obvious exceptions of when they play against us.

Pep said at the beginning of the season he was disappointed several players had turned up day 1 suggesting they wanted to leave. I’m guessing Mahrez, Palmer, Gundo, Walker, Silva were the main ones. 3 have left or are leaving and the other 2 have extended or extending.
This will be why he also said Palmer won’t be leaving on loan but would either stay or be sold, and so he was right. It’s sad to see the lad go but we can’t let sentiment cloud reality, he was good but was he really good enough to break in to a treble winning team? I’m not convinced he was. I see Bobb and McAtee as better prospects personally.
Anything over £40m was a no brainer so to get £45m is a snap their hands off deal. It’s irrelevant if we as City fans find it a strange move for him, it’s not our problem now and he’s old enough (and I’m sure advised by an agent etc) to understand the position he’s putting himself in. I can’t see him getting any more game time, and it’s evident Chelsea can’t set him up with the same talent he has to play with at City.
Im sure he’ll do very well in his career, but I’m not in the belief he is or will be ‘world class’ as some are making out.
He seems a nice lad and I wish him well, thanks for the minutes he played etc but we move on.

I agree with most of this but I think it’s unfair to claim Palmer was impatient.

He’s been a first team player for two seasons now and I don’t think he’s made consecutive starts once. He’s rarely played in his favoured position and even when he’s played well, he’s been dropped for the next game.

It feels like he’s always been a squad filler for us rather than a player being nurtured and developed for a key role like Phil.

It’s obvious Pep doesn’t think he’s good enough to get a first team place with us and in that case £45 million is excellent business.
Mate, Phil Foden only started playing in his preferred No 10 position after we'd won the league last season.

He's been used as a LW, RW false 9, & has had to bide his time. He recently said he wants to play every game & has spoken to Pep about this, & was told to be patient.

After 5 years of steadily building himself up, & bedding himself in, his patience is finally paying off through Kev's misfortune.

Another two years of swapping & chopping with KDB & Bernardo will hopefully see Phil become our undisputed No 10, & KDB's homegrown successor.

Phil is so much more than a brilliant player! He's now the example of best practice for all EDS products coming through.

If you're good enough, you'll be kept around. If you're patient enough, your opportunity will come.

When you compare the performance numbers of 21 year olds Palmer & Doku, it's evident which one suits City's current level better.

If Palmer doesn't like less minutes & the increased competition, then Manchester City isn't the club for him.

£45m & the opportunity of a fresh start elsewhere is for the best all round imo... \0/

Liked Palmer , but he was never going to get enough opportunity to develop into a first choice player for City (if he has that in him).
Financially Chelsea is probably a great choice, football wise I'm not so sure and think regular playing time at a mid level premier league club could have seen him find his level.

I never warmed to Cole like I did Rico or Phil he just never felt like one of our own to me no idea why I felt like this just did.
It is called unconscious bias and there is a scientific discipline devoted to researching it and there are 'tons' of books written about it.
And that is the reason you warmed to Rico and not to Cole although he is twice the baller.

I think so too but at least he'll be doing it for a lot more money. I'm sure he wanted more game time but let's not pretend money isn't a major factor here.
