Cole Palmer

What did rodri say about Philips?

He didn't directly mention Philips, but when you connect the dots, there's only one player who was brought in to challenge & rotate with Rodri.

A week later & having not featured this season so far, rumours circulated in the press that coaching staff aren't impressed with Philips in training, & doubt he has what it takes to succeed here.

At the same time reports circulated that City would be willing to listen to offers, with Liverpool, WHU, Newcastle & Bayern being mentioned as interested parties.

Not long afterwards, Philips restated his determination to remain at City & prove himself, citing Stones, Aké, Bernardo, Grealish, Rodri, Dog etc, who all said it took them a season or two to fully get Pep-Ball.

The only chink in his stance was Kalvin saying he'd only consider leaving if he wasn't playing, but that looks like a January/next summer decision.

Kalvin's retained his England place which seemed to be a major consideration. Waistcoat picking him yesterday put paid to any chance of him leaving this window.

However, with Nunes having signed, where does Philips fit in now?

I think to be honest it's a somewhat different scenario. Aké was badly injured for most of his first season. By his second season, he was starting to look comfortable. Third season, he looked bloody good. Johnny went through a rocky period, and there was a lot of talk on places like here about him being moved on. A lot of gossip-type stuff. But I never saw anything concrete or official from either the club or from other clubs.
Kalvin is simply not being selected. Not even for minutes. And we're now well stocked in his part of the pitch. I think it's curtains, personally.
Unfortunately, after Rodri's recent comments & speculation about him leaving this window, I'm forced to agree with you.

I held out hope for Kalvin, but Nunes only makes sense if he's groomed as Rodri's competition/rotation. Matheus isn't good enough further forward for us imo, which then leaves Philips in the lurch.

I honestly don't see where he fits in now. \0/

Pochettino comments are interesting- you get the feeling there's already a disconnect there between him and the higher ups.

Talking about how it was the sporting director who wanted to bring Palmer in, it's not necessarily about him getting more minutes than at City as that may not be the case, and that he's one for the future.

Whilst all that is true, pochettino highlighting the onus of this signing was on the sporting director is very interesting.

Do you ever give up on this?

Fuck me! Pochettino's just made it clear Cole Palmer's a Sporting Director & Owner signing, & he knew very little about it! (・o・)

He didn't sound too impressed, & said Palmer's a young player who's there to develop & gain more playing time.

Body language suggests Pochettino ain't pleased having players given to him that he didn't request! WTF is going on over at The Shed?

The plot thickens like lumpy custard! \0/

He didn't exactly sound too impressed, & said he's a young player who's here to develop & gain more playing time.
