Cole Palmer

I think on the face of it that sounds sensible but given the financial restrictions can they afford to be outside of the top 4 for 3 years?
Oh don't get me wrong, I think the house could collapse quite dramatically and it's flip of a coin as to whether it does. But I get the logic of it.

I definitely see the logic of building a team that will grow and challenge in 3 years time, but I definitely don't see logic in paying those kinds of fees and gambling so heavily on getting straight back into the champions league.

For what it's worth, I think the rest of the league is living in Pep's world until he leaves. I don't think it's a remotely bad plan to start building now and hoping you peak in ~3 years when he probably (might) have gone and the bar you need to clear has been lowered.

Yeah, I've been saying for years I can't wait for Pep to fuck off out of this league. Respectfully, of course :)

But even without Pep in the league, we still have a our work cut out in growing into a team that is built to win. Currently there are at least 4 teams, probably 5, ahead of us in the development of their teams. We've spent the money to jump up the list but now that the players are here, patience is needed to let him develop. There will be pressure from outside because the money spent is literally grotesque but when you look at the ages of all the players we've signed in the last 2 windows, everyone apart from Disasi is 22 or younger. That's why I say, as absurd as it sounds, I'm not expecting a title challenge in the next 2 years.

no guarantee those young uns will come good. We were a good team in the late 60s and through the 70s, then, as i remember it, we sold our international level players and reinvested in kids like Steve Daley. they didn't work out and a period of decline followed.

That's absolutely true. As a fan, all I can do is hope at least 70-80% of all the players signed come good. But even that feels like a bit like a pipe dream just because they are just so many new players.

Are you sure you are a Chelski supporter ?

Sound far too sensible .

It's a tough one with Palmer. On the one hand there is no such thing as promised game time with Pep unless you are one of a very few players.

On the other, the club go out and sign Doku and start him straight away in that RW position.

I personally would have loved to see Palmer get those full first 3 games of the PL season as an exclusive RW before we pulled the trigger and sold.

I get both sides of the situation.
It's down to the horse and cart I suppose but I don't think we'd have looked at Doku if Palmer hadn't already tried throwing his weight around.

I don't think Chelsea and City "bought" success in the way that is historically assumed, but I do think 20 years ago you could chuck a lot of money at stuff and pick up a trophy or two. It's wild to me that we are in an era where this level of spending from everyone barely guarantees a top four spot. Smart planning, directors of football, patience, developing youth somehow feel super important again.

Yep. Money can only get you so far now. You have to be organised, patient and smart in the way you invest and develop your players.
