Cole Palmer

Rico, Phil & Oscar ????
Phil absolutely...one of the games best in that drifting position...Rico...going in the right direction, Bobb possibly could in a couple of years who knows...but since 2020...when we started doing well again in FAYC how many players have gone through the academy...1,000's and this is a top academy too with some of Europe's best youngsters. I would have thought we should have a better return tbf.. i don't know what the academy costs in £m's each year but i assume a portion is factored into FFP running costs?

Agreed but I’m pretty sure our staff point out to young players what their suggested pathway is. They did with Phil & despite the idiotic media pundits screaming for him to go out on loan, he stayed & improved.
By all reports, & despite Pep pointing out that with Mahrez going, he’d have chances - Palmer wanted more - to play every week. So he went
I know, it seemed that he wasn't going to fit, wanted it all when the process from 18 - 23 should have been mapped out and explained to him, maybe he would still leave but i don't think his Chelsea club will be better than us in 2 - 3 years....so he has stepped down and won't be at the very top when he hits his peak....that's a big sacrifice ..maybe that should have been articulated don't know...

The "cost" of the academy, compared to the money it "brings in" is peanuts, just on Cole alone. The academy earns the club considerable money, and that is it's point.

It's a school, college, and university for footballers, nothing more nothing less, and if it produces first team players now and then, it's a bonus, I don't understand how people don't get this.

Of course we all get that point. But you would have to factor in the first team aquad wages forcall post 18 players from academy receive as well. Im sre you get this ! it does erode the balance sheet of the academy. My point is the academy SHOULD be more than a school for other clubs to benefit from
We cite Lavia and Cole money..but you cant rely on the odd academy sale to fund academy costs ANd significant wages of those who get a contract post academy. Most are released on a free! Waste of money for most clubs. Brentford saw the light and sacked theirs off for a unique trial system.

City benefit from it. It makes a significant amount of money which helps funds the first team squad.

Saying other clubs benefit from our academy is no different than saying a buying club benefits from a players previous club. The difference with academy/youth team players is that there is absolutely no guarantee of a long and successful career.

And his bird was moaning about the “culture”, “food” and “weather”. Manchester is hardly Barcelona and let’s be fair tapas beat a pasty barm any day.

I genuinely believe fans underestimate how much of this hits being a job it is for plenty of players.
Oh i think most do. Especially reading auto biographies...i give up now as manybread like a war of attrition where players fall out of love with the game because of the pressure. Eamon Dunphys one about a season with Millwall in 70's best Ive read on pressure of playing for a living. Listening on 5 livevover weekend 2 x ex liverpool players from 2000 were whacking golf balls balls at first team players cars because thry vented their frustration at not being in the 11. Countless stories re this type of thing. Its a dog eat dog job and not many really love it.

Yes I agree, although I would like to see a few more players come through. I suppose to a certain extent having such an excellent, and top of the pile academy, is a fairly new experience so we will make a few mistakes in our management and in who we do and don't keep. Added to that there will always be players who want to leave.
On a side note I noticed your location is Lincoln, I was there for a short break a couple of months ago, it was a fantastic place to visit, loved it.

I'd venture to say if we'd kept Cole we'd have not signed Doku and would not be top at the moment.

There's no way Cole would have had significant minutes for us although he has surprised me with a very good 1/4 season at Chelsea.
