You think an English football tradition that has 125 years of history and a beautiful trophy should be scrapped?

I think it should be played at different venues to Wembley (with a Manchester v London tie this year it should be somewhere like Coventry), but this trophy/fixture should never be scrapped. Even though I disagree with it being at Wembley, I always enjoy it.

Every single club in Europe has this and their equivalent on their honours lists.

Plus the money you think is a con is distributed to community initiatives and FA related charities all in England and Wales.
£248k to 124 clubs in the FA Cup proper, just £2k each from and gate and sponsorship pool of at least £3m. That is why it is a con as people like you think the money goes to good causes when it is a tiny fraction.

Some countries have Super Cups, they were never "shared" as no one wanted to win them or play in them. Having a shared "honour" made it meaningless along with 7 subs long before COVID made it a kick-about friendly.

It was so worthless that clubs refused to play in it until they were contractually obliged to, and that meant they took almost all the money generated. Really it should be awarded to City if it is a real trophy as we are the only team that qualified.

That’s £2k for each club more than they’d have if it was scrapped. Plus £1.25m is given to the clubs involved who are said to distribute it to good causes of their own.

People are also paid: Police, stewards, cleaners, kiosk workers, presenters etc.

It was our club that jumped at the chance to be in this when other clubs declined in 1972, and we won it and it’s on our honours list.

The prize money to the clubs does not go to good causes, nor the TV or sponsorship money. It is likely to be closer to 6 or 7% is earmarked for good causes, and there is no audit process for where it is spent so could be closer to zero in reality.

Same with the European Super Cup, it didn't exist the last time we won, and when united won it, they played one game at home against a team with no country, no honour in such honours.

Nothing existed before it was first created.

Football is a very young entity, it’s barely been going for 160 years. What we have seen mean little in the past doesn’t mean that will always be the case. I think the Community Shield has been an important trophy for about forty years now. Teams take it seriously these days, Pep certainly does.

No European UEFA competitions existed when we won the league in 1937, should they all be scrapped? They’re just money-making gravy trains, afterall.

They decided to scrap the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999, should we take it off our honours list because it doesn’t exist anymore? Nobody deemed it important enough to keep so what’s the point, eh?

All trophies are good to be part of and win, major and minor. I have always enjoyed the Community Shield and am looking forward to the Super Cup and WCC.

Look at the importance we’ve placed and enjoyment we’ve had with the Charity/Community Shield over the years:

Even though I would vehemently argue the FA Cup Semis shouldn’t be there, I don’t mind the Charity Shield been at Wembley. It’s a nice relaxing day out to start the season and the tickets are always pretty cheap.

It’ll always be a friendly in my mind though. I know at some point in the recent past it has been officially designated as a “Super Cup” And some foreign managers like Mourinho and Guardiola have talked it up a bit in recent years.

But I remember when David Seaman took Arsenal’s fifth penalty in it for a laugh one year and basically just back passed it to Schmeichel and the pair of them burst out laughing. Hardly vibes of a major trophy.
