Conscription

Same mood music in a lot of countries in Europe at the moment and similar comments made the news over here last week.
Anyone betwee 16 and 70 can be enlisted to the "war effort", but the maximum age for active servise is 47. There is talk of increasing it (70 is the new 50!). Sweden alone won't last long in a full frontal attack, it will be more of a resistance movement wearing an invader down.

I'm mid 50s but I'd probably go. I don't see why it should always fall to the young. I'd let them stay at home and give them a chance to experience the things that I have in my life. I actually saw this coming a while back and have been training biathlon for a few years. Not sure about the rules for ex-pats being caaled up in the UK, but I'd hold out for a rank of Major before taking the trip over.

If I hang on a couple of months I’ll be just old enough to avoid the front line it seems!

Yay.

One of the most corrupt militaries in the world, they have tons of shit rusting away or badly maintained. They have lost a naval war against a country with no navy and can't gain air superiority against a country with a small air force in comparison. Their missile stocks are low as they love wasting them on civilians instead of military targets.

What's being corrupt got to do with them being a Military powerhouse?

5th largest military in the world, they haven't lost a naval war against Ukraine, they suffered a few defeats without taking much of their Naval vessel in the region.

They can't gain air superiority due to the risk of missiles landing in NATO countries and causing it to grow bigger as a conflict.

It's all there to read online etc, not just Western propaganda against the Russians.

If they were so poor as a military force, why has nobody taken a chance to wipe them out?

Below is my reply to another poster.

what exactly do they have then?

So, as of Feb 2023, they had around 300,000 + military personnel actively involved in the Ukraine conflict.

Russia's military is over 4 million in size including its Army reserves etc, and as reported in early Dec 2023, they just increased their overall number by 170,000 EXTRA personnel. This doesn't mean they are all going to serve in Ukraine btw!

Yes there are big reports that between 300,000 to 400,000 Russian troops have been either Killed, Captured or wounded since this conflict began.

For context, according to BBC reports from Ukraine, they have 3 times the amount of active troops fighting in the conflict https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-67120904

Judging by many posts on the Russian/Ukraine thread there isn't a Russian left alive mate. We are told that most of their equipment is a bit shit and their soldiers suffer with very low moral, not a great combination.

What they do have is a weapon that will make the sky go orange.

I've seen that.

And very true on the weapon that makes the sky go orange
