Scotland data update

50 deaths - was 88 last week

803 cases - was 978 last week

4.8% positivity v 5.1% last week

1542 patients - 76 fewer than yesterday - was 1871 last week

This big fall matches England hospital data that I post each evening (falling around 4000 a week) across the past week and means that Scotland is now almost below the first wave peak

113 ventilated - up 1 - last week 128

They are changing how this measure is reported from tomorrow as more people are now staying on ventilator beyond 28 days which is the current cut off point for recording them.

Well it is possible mate, if it is due to the amount of people coming over here and all the strains are slightly different abroad and all the mixing of these variants is what causes our issues to be exacerbated then fair enough that’s the answer. Of course that one will end up being on the doorstep of our incompetent government being too late shutting borders but that will come out in the wash at a different time.
This is a simple, no political sumamry:Ministers failed to learn lessons from first Covid wave and locked down too late, Neil Ferguson says (msn.com)

I just hope these improvements don't mean that we'll open up too soon again - we need to learn from our mistakes ans see this out, no matter how frustrating it might be! Otherwise we'll be opening the cycle all over again!
The thing is there's an awful long time to go until we do vaccine 2. I think what we shouldo is drive down the virus to very low levels then find out how far we can open once we know more. It maybe a highly vaccinated population plus test and trace will work. Once I get vaccinated I shall worry a lot less. We only get new variants when there's huge amounts of virus about so hopefully it will stabilise.

We could do with a spit test rather than the tonsil swabs. Few will volunteer for testing at the moment as its unpleasant.

In Victoria a state of disaster was declared after a state of emergency was imposed which we are still under both passed without due process in both houses as is required under law.

In practical terms the police and the other enforcement personnel were given the power to arrest you if you refused to wear a mask and refused to let police into your home if they suspected you were not isolating or quarantining properly.

This in itself was counter productive and risked spreading the virus but was designed to spread the fear of not abiding by the law no matter how draconian or inappropriate the law and its enforcement might be.

Very few of the fines have actually been paid and the government in Victoria a far left leaning government with a mantra of taxing the individual as much as possible , being as soft on traditional forms of crime as is possible and kowtowing to the CCP as much as is possible.
My mate is in Torquay, Victoria, I know they were locked down for about 4 months around June onwards I think. He was more than happy to do so as it meant they could get back on the golf course in time for Spring and summer, (he's retired). The death toll I believe is very low but it was a hard line lockdown and I honestly don't think our Society here would accept it. With Torquay being on the coast and two hours out of Melbourne would they get away with some of the measures?

Scotland vaccination data

985, 569 first doses - 57, 447 yesterday - down from 61, 299 - second highest ever despite blizzards Nicola Sturgeon noted.

Also adding they will top one million first dose vaccinations today.

About 5,5 million people live in Scotland so it is already over 20% of the adult population.

99.8% of all older care home residents now vaccinated

96% of over 80s living in the open community

80% of those aged 75 to 79 in the open community

45% of those aged 70 to 74 in the open community

I attended a lecture by an eminent endocrinologist..The first thing he said was that there is good evidence and bad evidence, but still evidence..he suggested digging deeper, looking at the papers and analysing them in depth. Not easy to do this even for medics.

I went skiing many years ago and stayed in a chalet..there were four guys who were vegetarian..they told me that they were involved in research in Oxford University about prions in meat and they would not eat meat. They suggested the government was fully aware of this. I dismissed it to be honest. A year later the whole BSE scenario unfolded. We are told what people want to tell us as and when it suits the political agenda. We are mere pawns in a very complex game.

We are now told three months is better than three weeks for the second jab. Well which is right ? They havent had time to do double blind placebo controlled studies on statistically significant numbers especially with the new variants. Yes, I will have the jab when offered, but I have a tendency to disbelieve the information being pumped out in the press every day.

There aren't black and white answers.

Analysis of the AZ trial data suggests 12 weeks is optimal, with uncertainty.

For Pfizer and Modena there is no hard data.

Underlying biology suggests a gap up to 12 weeks should be fine.

That's the state of our knowledge. It's imperfect, but all we have to be decisions on.
