When this broke the BBC ran with a “how worried should we be?” narrative not a “should we be worried?” and have maintained that since. The first approach tells the listener they must be worried, the second one tells them they may or may not need to worry because we don’t know yet. That’s not balanced and it incites fear in certain sections of society.
 
The invariably excellent John Burn-Murdoch:



Glass half full: admissions are lower than for Delta as a proportion of cases, so it's milder -> no problem and maybe even an opportunity to outcompete with a mild version

Glass half empty: admissions rising at the same rate as delta -> this will be as bad as the delta wave

Glass roubaix: too early to say.
 
Im on day 8 after testing positive,
headaches no where near what they were last week,but im suffering bad stomach ache,on top of that I get so fatigued doing nothing,it really is a strange feeling.

Be honest mate I was knocked off my feet for a good couple of weeks. Worst of the symptoms lasted about 3 days. Nasty thing and it sounds like you’ve had a bit worse of a reaction than I did

Im supposed to be back in work on friday,don't think thats happening at the moment.Been double vaxed and had the booster weeks ago,god knows what i would have been like without them.
 


Ok, I know i have called him out recently for his views on Ivermectin ect. but information from 2 doctors in SA.

1) the one being picked up on by most of the news outlets trying to put a positive spin on it is a Doc in Pertoria ( the highest vaxed area in SA ) saying the symptoms she is seeing are very mild. headache and fatigue mostly. However she reports she is mostly treating under 40's.

2) An ICU Doctor in Soweto ( Dr Cambell thinks a very low Vaccine area ) is seeing a change in demographic to shift towards people in there 20's and 30s being hospitalised more.

Obviously these are annecdotal points, real solid data is needed and will come soon enough but hopefully this is showing vaccines are still working well.

Nitpicking. Obviously we should be worried until we know how worried.

To me it seems pretty pointless to try and gauge much from SA since their Vaccination rate is so much lower than ours.

You're right that it's too early to say until we see how it develops over here.
 
The UK is seeing far more cases in the under 40s too just like South Africa. From Delta not Omicron.It is very clearly shown in the daily data from Northern Ireland who post a chart that displays it visually

It will not be irrelevant that the ones in both countries with the most vaccine protection will be over 40.

So what we need to see is what the proportion of older age groups look like via Omicron.

But with Delta that took a while to emerge because Delta arrived in the UK when most over 60 had already had one dose and often two of the vaccines

So separating out from the data the age groups versus vaccine status will be easier in a well vaccinated country where the over 40s will be closer to fully vaccinated. If it breaks through in South Africa it will be telling. BUt much more telling is how it behaves in a heavily vaccinated (as in 3 dose) older community like the UK or other well vaccinated western nations.

I was double jabbed as well (Az) and Mrs MB was (Pfizer) and we both went down - her worse than me. Like you say it does make you wonder how you’d have been without them - I’m positive Mrs MB would have been in hospital because she was pretty close to GP sending her in as it was.

Hope you start to feel on the mend soon, it does wear you down.
