The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, urged people in the affected boroughs to get tested "as soon as possible".

"It's vital that we do everything we can to control this variant by taking a test and following the rules," he said.

People aged 11 and over who live, work or travel through the affected areas are being urged to take a Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, as well as using twice-weekly rapid testing.

The first case was found in early March and the DHSC said the testing operation was aimed at suppressing any possible new cases of the variant.

Dr Hopkins said: "Around one in three people with Covid-19 don't show any symptoms.
"By taking part you can protect yourselves and your loved ones and help us identify any possible new cases that would otherwise be missed, preventing further transmission and saving lives."

Surge testing was previously carried out in three postcode areas of Lambeth in February after a case of the South African variant was discovered.

In March, intensive testing was put in place in three areas of Wandsworth borough following a small number of cases.

From BBC news. Question is, are these cases likely to be newly imported cases again and if so, how is this happening? Or, perhaps even more worrying, were cases missed during the surge testing in February and March and it's been circulating in the community and beyond since that point?

Glad to see more evidence that since December, test and trace testing is finally working.
It only took 9 months.
 
ONS data this morning shows that all causes deaths for England and Wales in the week ending 2 April were below the average of the past 5 years for the fourth consecutive week.

Down from 10, 045 in the previous week to 8201 last week.

The average for the equivalent week over the five years was 10, 130.

Obviously lockdown is going to lead to fewer traffic accidents and the like and deaths are more common in Winter than Summer even without a pandemic - but nonetheless this has been an accelerating pattern as the number of Covid deaths has fallen dramatically in the past month or two.
 
The next phases of the vaccine roll out to under 50s will be in 3 stages:

40 - 49 now, followed logically by 30 to 39 then 18 to 29. Gov UK just announced.

Think they may have reassessed it as the site apparently crashed earlier when too many tried to access. Or it was always likely they would do it in stages within the groups. Much as they did with the older ranges.

But these are the three broad groups they are using (so no under 40 technically until they get to all the 40s) but as we have seen before with ages some practice areas will get ahead of others due to local demographics meaning they are through the people living there in that age bracket more quickly so it will look like they have.

Anyway - felt great to have a quiet pint last night even in the freezing cold. The Grey Horse in Reddish - proper blue pub and a big beer garden. Shame it’s a Holt’s but you can’t win em all.

It was a bit of a nightmare to book the jabs online this morning as the website buckled under the number of people trying to book their jabs.

Took me about 45 minutes but managed to book bot jabs at the same time
