If lots of people are reckless then we will get another wave, although the vaccination roll out will, hopefully, reduce the scale of any possible further wave. It is good that people have been able to go out and enjoy themselves in beer gardens and I think a lot of people will have a session or 2 and the novelty will wear off, thus helping to manage the risk.

I heard on the radio that the South African variant is being found in South London and hopefully test, trace and isolate works to help to prevent an outbreak spreading.
Agree with all that. It was great to see people enjoying themselves in Sheffield and Manchester yesterday, I didn't see any reckless behaviour round Stevenson Square and Ancoats but perhaps I'm not looking hard enough.

It was all pretty restrained where I was in Leeds. Isolated incidents might make parts of the media because they aren’t the norm but most of the coverage I’ve seen of yesterday was positive.

One of my locals opens today but I’m probably going to return next week when you can book a table at the last minute or just walk in.

A "significant" cluster of the South African Covid-19 variant has been found in two areas of south London where surge testing has been implemented.

Wandsworth and Lambeth will see additional testing after 44 confirmed and 30 probable cases were identified.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) called it the "largest surge testing operation to date".

All identified cases are isolating or have completed their isolation and their contacts have been traced.

Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for NHS Test and Trace, said the number of cases was "significant" and stressed it was "really important people in the local area play their part in stopping any further spread within the local community".

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, urged people in the affected boroughs to get tested "as soon as possible".

"It's vital that we do everything we can to control this variant by taking a test and following the rules," he said.

People aged 11 and over who live, work or travel through the affected areas are being urged to take a Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, as well as using twice-weekly rapid testing.

The first case was found in early March and the DHSC said the testing operation was aimed at suppressing any possible new cases of the variant.

Dr Hopkins said: "Around one in three people with Covid-19 don't show any symptoms.
"By taking part you can protect yourselves and your loved ones and help us identify any possible new cases that would otherwise be missed, preventing further transmission and saving lives."

Surge testing was previously carried out in three postcode areas of Lambeth in February after a case of the South African variant was discovered.

In March, intensive testing was put in place in three areas of Wandsworth borough following a small number of cases.

From BBC news. Question is, are these cases likely to be newly imported cases again and if so, how is this happening? Or, perhaps even more worrying, were cases missed during the surge testing in February and March and it's been circulating in the community and beyond since that point?

Morrison's Dunkinfield around 4:30 yesterday. Three girls, two lads, mid to late teens, all together, no distancing, no masks, gobby shites. The Asian Security guard (about mid twenties) came into the store and asked them to leave as they were breaking the rules. One of the girls said she had panic attacks, Security man said it doesn't stop you social distancing. Next thing, interfering woman joins the argument, puts her arm round the girl and tells her not to leave the store. I politely tell her the Security man is doing his job and it's nothing to do with her, she replies:

"He's fucking grooming these kids, fuck off"

She's not representative of her age group but racism amongst morons does still exist.

I must add the young group detached themselves from the woman, when I left the store I could see them having a calm conversation outside with a couple of Managers, hopefully they may have learned a lesson.

Just want to say that I’m mostly a lurker on BM and don’t post much, but like many others am finding Healdplace’s updates really useful - thanks so much for putting the time and effort into this.

Over the last year I drove myself into a spiral of anxiety and madness reading the papers and their conflicting messages and figures. I’ve binned them all off and mostly get my updates from this thread now and feel much the better for it.

Anyway - felt great to have a quiet pint last night even in the freezing cold. The Grey Horse in Reddish - proper blue pub and a big beer garden. Shame it’s a Holt’s but you can’t win em all.

Hopefully the initial rush to the pubs and shops will die down, can't understand the need to be honest, especially the people queuing to get in early doors. I'm happy to have a quiet pint when i see it's not busy and i can sit as a billy no mates in the corner.
