Very good news. Barring some large unknown issue with testing or results, it's looking near certain that we can control this new variant.

Now we'll see if we've finally learned the lessons of the past year:

Get cases down very low before relaxing.

Get test/track/isolate working so when we don relax, we don't lose control. Much better support for people isolating.

Reduce restrictions gradually.

If cases start to rise, respond immediately.

Control our borders, including a policed quarantine system where needed, *not* voluntary.

Unfortunately, all the political pressure seems to be the exact opposite of these.

don’t forget the vaccines . up the roll out as quickly as possible

Yes the good news is cases are falling in the other 3 nations too. So not just England.

BUT....the big but here is the North West is going up whilst everywhere else is going down and is disturbingly near both London and the South East today. Much closer than in recent weeks.

I've had a strong personal feeling that a theory of mine would happen, and I think the stats are starting to show it - i felt many would bend the rules a bit over Xmas/NYE for very obvious reasons, but actually then relatively stick to the rules post new year's day. Not maybe as much as the first lockdown, but a lot more than recently. A kind of 'well, we've had our fun, so we'll take it easy during Jan/Feb' kind of mentality given they know the vaccine is now out. I may be wrong, but people are relatively predictable and I've got a feeling lots will do that. The sharp fall in case numbers does imply this! Hopefully!

exactly what is happening.

But just imagine what a better place we would be right now if everyone just cancelled Xmas and new year

Good to see the Home Sectary’s robust support for the police. I bet the Coppers wished they got that level of back up from Cressida Dick, for example.

REGIONAL SCOREBOARD:

North West UP by 1034 to 6453

East UP by 419 to 5143 - now well below the NW daily.

London down by 1551 to 8559 - closest to NW in weeks and falling as a trend now.

South East UP 270 to 6962. Very close to the NW overtaking this region too.

The trending is down by a lot in the south but up in the North West whereas the other northern and midlands regions fell also today.

It is growing clear the NW is the new London.

All we can hope is that the same reductions will come here before the NW reaches the 12 - 15 K a day numbers London did as all these rising cases will mean rising NW deaths in the weeks to come.

The vaccine will not save those already having started that chain through the hospital system.

We MIGHT have the advantage of being last to see this growth and so not reach those heights before the downturn comes here too.

The next week or two's numbers will tell us.

Glad you're up and about pal. Great news. Hopefully the rest of the family are the same.

As for those cunts. Fuck em. They're the people I wont forget when this is long over. Karma has a funny way of working and I believe it will get them in one way or another.

Thanks bud. I was knackered after ten minutes.

Had a chest exam today, sort of good news.

Won't give me any more antibiotics, had two courses already.

Docs said my lungs at the bottom are now clear but defo still 'sticky' at the top where the alveoli are. They've no idea how long it will take to clear and stop coughing.

I thought alveoli was the stuff you dipped your bread in on holiday?

You have to be kind to yourself, so even if I have a better day, I don't take it for granted, just chill on my bed.

Currently reading The Book Thief.

Highly recommended to anyone during lockdown.

Better than (very) old copies of KOTK?!?

You can imagine, but it was never going to happen as families were going to do what they were going to do. Cancel Christmas wasn’t possible whatever the government or anyone else said.

Great book, don’t bother with the film though.

It’s hard to know. Plenty would have gone ahead with a restricted Christmas meet up because “Boris Saved Christmas”. Changing the rules at the 11th hour was never going to work and it was unfair on Londoners asking them to cancel Xmas at the last minute.

Much of the damage was done putting Southerners and Scousers in Tier 2

I posted them in detail for all the nations earlier this afternoon.

Search above on my user name it will bring all the posts and you will see them easily that way.

GREATER MANCHESTER

Unfortunately - up today - nearly 700 from last Monday when the UK cases total was 15K higher than today.

That is a flashing light about who is in trouble right now.

Though the whole NW is up today - Merseyside too. Though not above their recent highs as GM is not.

Indeed the % of GM cases (1833) of the NW total today falls slightly from 29% to 28%. Though up from the 24/25% of a few days ago.

Most places in GM up today. Nobody under 100.

The usual suspects had bad days - Trafford, Stockport, and Wigan.

All the best boroughs who were being excluded or considering exclusion from the restrictions that the rest of GM was in, Now the ones posting the worst numbers regularly whilst the ones that were some of the highest in the UK in the autumn - eg Bolton and Oldham - continue to post better numbers and lead GM with Tameside.

There has to be a clue here and it may be about levels of infectivity if this virulent strain is punishing the areas that have had the lowest level of herd immunity so far whilst largely not doing in the same degree in thise areas that have much higher local infection rates over the past months.

If you are a fan of long reads with an historical background Ken Follet's trilogy is entertaining:

Fall of Giants
Winter of the World
Edge of Eternity

Chronicles the 20th Century and I learned a lot especially about World War One.

I'm going to get the Book Thief, never heard of it but just googled and it's my kind of thing.

So at the moment. Are we on target to fully vaccinate 14 million (most vulnerable) by mid feb ?

The target is to give these groups at least one shot as there is now up to 12 weeks between the first and second dose. Based on the current numbers this target won't be reached but clearly the rate will be ramped up. My feeling has been that it will be the end of next month to do these groups and that will still be a great effort.

Thanks for the figures, but I took Boris's message the other day to say the daily brief would now give these figures
