Coronavirus (2021) thread

I know, every time I open the internet it's a barrage of bad news every day on this. I'm not even half excited for sunday to be honest. 16 months of covid has made my head go, not sure what to do. Sorry.
Don't read the Internet, don't watch the news, don't come on this thread. The virus has been in circulation now for over 18 months. You know the dangers and how to protect yourself. Do yourself a favour and watch some films, read a book, listen to music. You can quite easily avoid all the negativety and save yourself a lot of mental trauma.

I post the England hospital data every evening in here. And the daily numbers for the other three nations. There has been a significant jump up in the past week following on from the jump up in cases the week before that,

Anyone who is interested just read those posts around 6 pm each evening Mon - Fri (they do not post it weekends) and you will see what is happening and why it is getting worse.

Basically for past weeks via Delta it was just the NW rising and after a week or so increasing patient numbers then ventilator numbers then deaths.

Now every England region is following the same path and numbers are escalating in all these settings and the NW has not even peaked yet, Though signs are it is flattening - latest admissions there were the highest yet. Over 100,

These England numbers ARE rising, WILL rise and escalate because it will be 9 regions not just 1 driving them daily. Simple maths.

We will thankfully be nowhere near where we were in January despite the increased transmissibility because the vaccines work. Not 100% but enough to make a big difference. And mostly younger people are catching it now which helps too as fewer of them have underlying conditions that worsen prognosis and so length of hospital stay.

But we are going up it will impact hospitals and it is all guesstimates as to where that will top out,

Other than it will be several times ahead of where we are already,

Though they may be assuming it is better to face that in Summer than in Winter when numbers in hospital via other things would also pile on to the problems,

Do we have to put the figures on though or can we not have a separate thread for them? I know I don't have to read the thread but reading the figures is very depressing most days as it's usually bad news or phrased in a way that is bad.
I think the press can do us all a favour and stop publishing them too. This is just my opinion but I don't think a football forum should be publishing health figures which are most of them time negative despite our excellent vaccination programme.

I like you.

but I personally think you should be banned from this particular thread. For your own well being.

Use the Ignore function.
A lot more of us are grateful that someone goes to the effort of collating the figures into understandable data, which allows us to make more reasoned comment when the government announces new measures.

No offence, but why do you want another thread? This is the thread for data and discussion of Covid, the science etc etc. if you find it depressing, read a different thread. there's one in politics for the political decisions around Covid. there's another for the vaccines and another for the conspiracy chat.

this one is the main one for data and science chat. its exactly what this thread is for.

Healdplace's data has been 2nd to none.

Either just don't be tempted to open this topic or set our (brilliant) resident statistician Healdplace to ignore.

If you want me to stop posting I will be very happy to stop doing it, This is very time consuming and I do not do it for fun.

Nor do I phrase it to look bad. I tell it like it is. And that will change day to day as this is a pandemic which sadly cares nothing about feelings.~

But I try to make my posts balanced on what the data says not on what me or anyone else might want them to say. And it certainly is not phrased to make it look depressing, Who seriously would do that and why?

I will post it here or wherever the Mods want me to post or not at all if that is the view of the majority posting. And will not be sorry the day I have to stop.

When cases were dropping in the spring lockdown and vaccination first starting to make an impact on deaths, there were lots of positive posts about the data.

When cases are rising fast, particularly when we didn't expect it, it's unsurprising that posts are more negative.

And it is a thread specifically about health issues! Maybe just ignore it?

Again, it’s like but not like. All these other European countries, plus America too, are going to get a rude awakening.
Testing is going to have a huge impact on this data, we test nearly 16x more than the US does so we can't be surprised if our figures appear 16x worse... The positivity rate shows that certainly in the US it's far worse there already.

The same applies to Europe, France is the testing leader in the EU but we test nearly 6x more than France does. So France might have less cases but it doesn't mean that they are in a different situation.

The major worry for any of these countries is for those with lower vaccination rates. They could see a situation where hospitalisations/deaths increase above ours whilst their cases are lower, the same thing has happened in India although the difference there is many deaths will be going unreported.
